Any quick/easy way to do the "rear" (large) adjustment on a regular '62 A-body aluminum manual steering box? I had a 20:1 ratio chuck put in, guy set it too loose, steering
wheel has too much play. I don't have the special wrench, nor any tools
(or time) to remove pitman arm. ??

If it's like any other steering box, you'll need to do a "sector mesh" adjustment. On the top of the box, (upper end of the pitman shaft) there is a set screw with a jamb nut. Loosen the jamnut and turn the setscrew clockwise (test the steering wheel periodically to measure your progress) until the steering feels right, and then tighten the jamb nut. Don't go too tight or the steering will not return to center like it should (and as we all are accustomed to). You'll need a flat screwdriver (or perhaps an allen wrench) and a combination wrench (13/16?).

It is a good idea to double-check the worm shaft bearing preload before adjusting the sector mesh.
If you have a long rod you can use that to "break-loose" the large stamped steel locknut then tap the spanner/ bearing cone clockwise to get the bearing free play out.
You should back-off the sector mesh adjustment before setting the worm shaft preload, then reset the sector mesh.

No, as I posted, I need to do the *rear* adjustment, not the *top* adjustment you describe.

Great idea. I'll try that as soon as I scare-up a long rod and a hammer. Thanks!
