Where can i get cheap relible headers i'm only 16 and on a LOW budget i'm keepin' the 1 bbl on it since gas prices are 2.75 a gallon for cheap stuff and i want to get good gas mileage like around 25-30 mpg when i start driving it the car is a 1971 plymouth duster with a /6

You don't need headers if you're sticking with the 1bbl carb. Just get a bigger exhaust system built attached to your stock manifold. |

the exhast manifold has a crack and i keep being told go with headers you'll get better gas milage. but, thanks

Headers usually hurt real world fuel economy due to the lack of exhaust heat to the intake manifold. For economy I would have 2 1/4" exhaust built off the stock exhaust manifold and pay close attention to the timing curve and carburetor tune. You'll also want to drive more like someone who is 46 rather than 16.

Izzy Dont waste your budget on headers. Get a stock manifold and "new" 2 1/4 exhaust. It will work MUCH better. Frank |

I don't mean to hijack the thread here, but hey Josh, I'm 46. What are you trying to say!?!?  Sorry, I couldn't resist.  Back to the subject: If you are staying with a 1bbl carb, I also say to not spend money on headers. A larger, more free flowing exhaust will be all you need. Maybe save up some dough and get some "Dutra Duals" later on, which will last you forever. Or at least until you're my age!

I'm running Cliffords and a 4-barrel on a mild build and I can say one thing... the car's fun and all, but I think it could be just as fun with a 2bbl and dutra duals... I think I pull 15mpg on a good day, and I try to keep my foot out of it as much as possible =( |

No worries. I put 36 initially (my age) and then realized how I drive at times so I had to add a decade. Sorry, I couldn't resist. My '67 with a Holley 390 on an Offy intake with a stock exhaust manifold and 2 1/4" exhaust doesn't quite get 20 MPG on the highway, but it's close. The cold driveability with the exhaust heated manifold is much, much better than an unheated manifold and headers. |

^^ Yea, I get very very mild cold drive problems for the first 5 minutes running the headers. After that it's all good. But I'm in CA, and since getting the car back in April it's not really been all that cold to be honest. If I were actually in a cold place I would probably be working to replace the Cliffords. |

Izzy, I hate to tell you this but you are never going to get 25-30 mpg out of a 71 Duster with out putting in some type of over drive trans. 16mpg around town is about all you will get and maybe 22 highway. Clifford makes reliable headers but their customer service can really suck. Dont let people sacre you about cold weather drivability. I ran headers for 5 years with out a choke in Pennsylvania, we get weeks on end below freezing. if your carb is tuned properly, you can get in start it up fast idle for 2 minutes and drive off. Aside from the carb heat issue, more reasons to avoid headers are (a) cost, (b) difficulty of installation, (c) headers often rust out after several years. Better to replace the stock cast-iron exhaust manifold and go with a 2 1/4 inch exhaust as mentioned above. If that isn't enough exhaust for you, save up and install Dutra Duals and a y-pipe later on. |

Reed, I gotta dissagree with you on all points. I got my headers used at Carlisle for $75(not expensive). The brand new cheap chinese exhaust manifold I got for my convertable was well over twice that much. Brand new Clifford headers are about half the cost of Dutra Duals. I had no problems installing them (Just use good quality gaskets the first time) and they didn't rust out after daily driving for over 5 years and remember they were used before I got them. I live in the rust belt. |
