Well its been doing it ever since I have had the truck, but my 86 Ram misses at idle. I have checked compression, they were all 110psi, replaced wires, plugs (#1 plug fouls out every once in a while), and cap.I still have to drop the lean burn distributor and was thinking about a higher voltage coil.

Just wondering if anybody else has had this issue with there 225, and if they have ever found anything to help.

You say you have a lean burn distributor. What other parts of the lean burn system are still present?

my 83 D-150 had a persistent light mis at idle, new plugs, wires never did a thing to affect it. Lean burn system was as factory as it could be after 26 years. I had noticed that when I put a timing light on it the illuminated timing mark was very erratic at idle.
just for the heck of it I put in a 1960 170 slant points distributor that I found and dis-mounted the lean burn. I did put in new points , used the same cap and rotor,, like magic,, the miss went away, throttle response is better, with the lean burn the motor would mainly "thrash" above 3500 RPM,, now it pulls cleanly easily to 4000.With a timing light on it, the damper timing mark at idle is rock steady. Eventually I'll put in a HEI system, I wanted to see how the motor ran with an old school ignition,, answer is ,, it runs better.

I removed the feedback Carter 1bbl about a year ago and picked up a Holley 1920, that improved throttle response quite a bit. The lean burn computer and distrubutor are still in it though.

Yep, #1 plug usually gets twice as dirty as the other plugs, I figure the valve guides on #1 are shot since the truck burns oil like a whaling ship.

Thanks DadTruck, I was wondering if mine was the only one that ran goofy at idle, and like I said before we have looked over everything. I guess its time for a new distributor.
Was it a very noticable differance with the points distributor? Because my truck has always been a slug when accelerating and I have always question my lean burn computer.

Mine ran like crap and idled with a miss with the Lean Bum. Removed the carb and installed a Holley 1920. Still had the idle miss. Removed every vestige of Lean Bum from the truck and went with a stock Mopar ignition box. Still missed at idle. No vacuum leaks, new timing chain, new dizzy. Still missed at idle.

Try swapping to the HEI once you eliminate all other potential culprits. It'll probably cure it. :)

D Ram 1596,, changing to the points distributor made a real difference in both idle quality and acceleration above 3000 rpm. Put a timing light on yours and see if the mark is stable at idle. The mark on my 83 D-150 was very erratic prior to changing the distributor.

Reason I ask as have not expanded on the one fouled plug, wet with fuel? Dry black soot? Oily?

Because I have this dry sooty plug also as in completely covered.

Cheers, Wizard

The #1 plug on mine is usually dry and sooty too. It was so bad when I first bought it was only running on five cylinders. That first time it was oily but it was occasionally driven to haul things and had sat for a few months

Which plug is dirty on your engine?

Exact problem as yours, mine is 2.2L 4 cyl mopar (cyl 2). Google turned up very little on these. This is why it is my interest to hear what you find out in the end. Mine still runs with this, last compression check was even, no leaks and manifold vacuum was 17Hg with vacuum gauge's needle doing some quiver. (around 2-3 Hg range).

Doesn't the good engine shows the manifold vacuum with no quivering needle?? Look, I haven't had a chance to check out on other properly running gas engines because my other friend is all diesel. :D

I have not done a manifold test on mine, I dont have the tools. Like I said before I have the feeling my valve guides are shot, or my ignition system is running really badly.

This site gave a few good reasons and what the gauge would do. http://www.theautoist.com/vacuum_guage.htm

What I didn't mention this blackened plug in mine is same before I replaced head with rebuilt head, bought as complete minus camshaft that I supplied as good when I swapped heads. Still exact same condition for mine. I'll keep a eye on your posts.

Cheers, Wizard

That's good question and replaced camshaft because old camshaft was bent .007 on center journal offset. Also had a serious pit in one of lobe (galling) when changing heads. Hydraulic adjusters are new and good set of rockers taken with the good camshaft.

In other words, not this problem either.

Cheers, Wizard
