Hello, again, friends. Thanks for all of the feedback relating to my 61 Belvedere with the aluminum 6 blowing out oil. We removed the oil pump and the plunger in the pressure relief valve was indeed stuck! It is stuck so firmly, in fact, that replacing the pump is necessary. Here's my next question...Chrysler reduced the number of bolts on these pumps from six to five in later models. The new pump I have bought declares that it will still work with only five bolts. But the new pump is cast iron, not aluminum like the one removed. Anyone have any experience with this? Will the iron on aluminum present a problem in this area? The head is iron, so I didn't necessarily see a problem. |

There is a gasket and there is no problem using pump with an iron housing. The bigger concern is the quality of the oil pump drive gear used on an aftermarket pump. Some of the gears were made of soft material and fail quickly. Some options are: Swap the gear off your old pump onto the new pump, prior to installing. Glue the gasket to the block and grease the pump side so you can pull the pump and inspect the gear after 50 to 100 miles of use. Purchase a case hardened drive gear and install that onto the new pump. DD http://www.slantsix.org/articles/oil-pu ... report.htm |
