a second voltage regulator on the fender, prior to the battery? The actual voltage regulator sits on the back firewall, but the unit on my fender is not functioning properly on my slant 198, Canadian made, if that helps. Thanks in advance for helping me in my ignorance again, Mark

Seriously, this could be one of several factory items, or some aftermarket doo-dad added in the last 40 years. Year, make, model?

Also, what year and model is the vehicle?

A solenoid? On the fenderwell? :? Something is really wrong there. The only solenoid I am aware of on slant six powered vehicle is the starter solenoid and that is integral with the starter motor, not mounted on the fender. Please post pictures.

Isn't the starter relay mounted on the firewall though? And isn't the starter relay a relay and not a solenoid?

The relay on my '74 is mounted on the left inner fender, just behind the battery tray.

Post subject:  Interesting...

I have a fender mount solenoid (cross it with a screwdriver to crank) on the '73 swinger, my '87 d150 has it on the starter.

I have heard the fender style described as ford style?

Who knows the skinny on this?

The item circled in red is the Mopar starter relay. I can't recall ever seeing one of these not mounted on the firewall, generally close to the starter motor.

Ford starter relays/solenoids look like a cylinder with a bracket on the back and four studs sticking out in opposite directions from the bottom portion of the cylinder.

My 68 Cuda has it mounted on the firewall.

My 71 Duster and 67 Valiant have it on the inner wheel well next to the battery.
