I'm going to use a Vertex Magneto in my dragster, and it has the nylon gear. The cam will be a billet cam , and I would like to find out if anyone has any idea where to get a aluma-bronze drive gear like the ones used on all steel billet cams ?

I have a guy who will cut me one for $200.00 ..... I would like to have a few .

I seem to remember that the Cox Brothers had some made for use with their roller cams. Maybe someone knows where one of them are. I had a Vertex once and it had a bronze gear on it (this would have been in the late 60s). I sold it to a guy for $75! I would be interested in learning more about your car. I will do a search and see what you have posted.

There's a bronze slant-6 distributor drive pinion made in Australia and available from Pentastar Parts.

I looked at the listing and it says "NOTE : ONLY SUITABLE FOR AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION 'BOSCH' POINTS DISTRIBUTORS." Then that is followed by a footnote that indicates it suits all slant 6 distributors. I would want that bit of ambiguity cleared up before I bought one.

I am pretty sure that the gears the Cox boys have (had) were for the oil pump drive and not the distributor.
I have not talked to either John or Jim Cox in a couple of years so I am not sure if they still have any.
I still have some of the bronze oil pump drive gears.

Well, since I'm not the one buying a bronze gear, that letter is likely to be delayed for some time. In other words, don't hold your breath.

As long as it fits better than the Dorman Help gear 90450...

Surely someone has purchased that Aussie gear and will come along and update this thread! :)

What fit problem did you have with the nylon gear? Let me guess: The hole's drilled in the wrong place and when you install it there's a big gap between the top of the gear and the bottom of the distributor?

That's always the problem with the Dorman/Help! gear.

That's not a problem, and it's not confined to the Dorman gear. They're all drilled in the "wrong" place -- even the genuine Mopar gears -- and always have been, because that's not the roll pin hole. Never has been.

See this post (and the rest of the thread).

This, like the spark plug ring washer thing, is one of those little bits of slant-6 service knowledge that keeps trying to get buried in the sands of time.

I measured the shaft of the Vertex and a stock distributor: Both are .500" So assuming the Auzzie gear will fit a .500" shaft, then it will in fact fit a stock distributor and a Vertex.

From a reply to an email I sent the other day:

Thanks for your email. I have revised our listing to read 'Bosch Australian Distributors Only' to clear up any misinformation that may arise. However I can tell you that I have on a few occasions sold the gears to US Slant 6 owners, The primary difference between this (bosch) gear and the Mopar gear is the bore size of the shaft. The bosch gear needs to be bored to suit the Mopar shaft, as far as I am aware they are interchangeable once this modification is complete.

kind regards,

Just thought you lads (and lasses) might want to know... I sent another email inquiring about the actual diameter and will post what I find out.

The gear ID is 12.44mm

or about 0.490" so a slight lapping of the ID and the gear should fit.
