I have an engine to build for my truck. The engine came from a 1987.The use of vehicle will be daily driver. The rear gears are 3.55.Tach reads 2900 rpm at 65 to 70 mph.I have an auto with lock-up,factory HS blue stamping.I will be running a one barrel carb on the factory cast aluminium intake.I will upgrade to a two barrel later. The exhaust will be factory with 2 1/4 at manifold. The deck height is .150.The head CCed at 60 to 61.The valves will remain stock size.My goal is to run 87 octane gas.I am exploring cams at the moment.Correct me if any of the following is wrong.Duration determines rpm at which peak power is produced.Lift determines amount of power.Intake closing point determines dynamic compression ratio[DNC].This is less than static compression ratio.Exhaust opening point is how long the pressure pushes the piston.Overlap is how long the intake charge can flow out the exhaust.Or how long the exhaust can "suck on the intake charge.I am asking this to find the cam that fits the intended use.I would like to stay with a hydraulic cam.I know shorter push rods or cam regrind to compensate. When I determine the cam specs I will know how much to have milled off the head to get the DNC to run 87 octane.Around 7.9 to 8.4 is my guess.I need more power at highway speeds to overcome the "brick" aerodynamics.I have read a lot of the build posts here and the knowledge on this board is amazing. Thanks for reading.Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

I will be doing this soon for my brother's 74 Duster. I will be building a hydraulic motor so I am very interested in the cam recommendations you get.

I am leaning toward a split duration cam.Longer on intake vs exhaust.Lift in the .435 to .450 range.Overlap 39* to 61*.Duration 256 to 270 intake.Exhaust 252 to 262.If I have the cam reground to compensate for head milling.I can adjust the rest of the distance with shorter push rods.Over bore is undetermined as I still have to pull the pistons and measure.I will be doing bowl work and light tract porting.Has any one welded up a chamber to achieve a quench area?

MotoGrey found a split hydraulic cam at Oregon Cams. Send him a PM or give Oregon Cams a call.
