| Post subject: | Rear leaf replacement |
Hey Guys, I am going to replace the saggy rear leaf springs on the valiant. Decided not to wait any longer. Question is who do i buy them from ? I searched through some of the earlier posts and it seems that JC Whitney is the definite poor choice. Who delivers the best product at the most attractive price? Espo? Thanks, Russ |

I dunno, I'm running a set of Whitney 6 leafs on my '76 Duster and it took an 8.25" rear end in my trunk to get those to sag enough the make the ride height correct...After the rear came out, it popped right back up to that "muscle" look....Take a look around and shop competitively, I'd think that Espo...etc.. all get them from one supplier/wholesaler then mark it up and don't pass most of the savings to the consumer. -D.Idiot |

Had an interesting conversation with the guy at General Spring today. Espo no longer lists a-body springs, so I went with General to get replacements for my '64 Valiant convertible. General is a supplier, but does not make the springs. He had at least a half-dozen 5 and 6 leaf springs listed for a-bodies. They varied by the arch dimension, leaf thickness, and bushing size. He guessed that the $99 5-leafs that you can get from JC Whitney are the same ones he gets for that price. Those had a higher arch than the others, but were the least expensive. I opted for a set of 5-leafs that cost $149 ea, but had a much lower arch that should match the OEM dimension. I will have to drill out the holes in the frame to 1/2" from the stock 7/16", but springs from some later models use 5/8" bolts, so it could have been worse. A complete set of springs, shackle kits, bolts and U-bolts came to just over $400 with shipping. That was a bit more than I expected, but maybe I won't have to put up with the raked look when they are installed. |

They've never listed them in their ads or on their website; because there are so many different specific types you've always had to call them and ask for what you want (or for their advice on what to get).

I was under the impression that ESPO fabricated their springs after a phone call to them. When I ordered a pair of six leaf, original equipment ride height, rear springs as year for the ’67 Dart from ESPO, they arrived in about a week smelling of fresh paint. I am pleased with their selection, service, and pricing. |

I called John R Spring in Michigan and another company on Ebay (MCVeigh Springs) and they are both made in the USA and $99 per spring Cost me about 225 shipped if i recall I chose the mcveighs and the car rides wonderfully They were 5-leaf ones for my valiant Came with bushings too |

Here is what I did: I took a pair of leaf springs out of a Volare to a shop that re-arches springs. I don't remember exactly what they charged (it was several years ago), but I think it was around $80 or $90 bucks. That may not be helpful to any of you, but I thought that I would throw that out there as another possible option. |
