Ryan's Dart blew the top right out of the coil while it was setting in the driveway. I don't have all the details, and I know he will chime in ,but I think he had driven the car and had just parked it. He said it was turned off, just setting there and he heard something go pop! Went over and checked and the whole top of the coil was missing and oil was everywhere.

This is the same coil and ignition that has been on the car since we got it running again early in the year. It has a MSD 6AL ignition and a new blaster coil. New, meaning it was installed and has been running for the last 9 months. No changes made to anything? So what's the likely culprit here? Anything we need to check or did we just have a bad coil?

Thanks,
Rick

Bummer! I'd check that when the ignition is off that there isn't any current going through the coil. Since the MSD box gets power directly from the battery it's within the realm of possibility that the ignition box is feeding the coil even with the key off. This doesn't seem the time of year you'd blow up a coil that was simply overfilled when it was built, but you never know.

Yeah, Dad pretty much has the story right. I drove the car for about 15 miles, parked it in the driveway, and about 5 min after the key was off the coil popped. I just wanted to make sure it was a bad coil, and not another problem before I put a new coil on. I will check tomorrow, and make sure there is no voltage when the key is off. Is this something that happens occasionally? I never heard of it before. I'll check voltage first and then put another coil on it if you think its just a bad coil. Thanks

save the bad coil and contact msd, they might want the coil and they may
ship you a new one. i had a Master lock for 10 years and the shackle
fell out off, i called them and they told me to mail the broken lock to
them and a new one was shipped to me.

Sounds like you've got a bad coil. MSD has been moving their coil production offshore to China recently, and I would be very surprised if the quality of their coils went up as a result...
