'68 Dart column shift manual steering- needs the column restored.. It clicks, it pops, it rings, it's doing everything wrong however it does steer the car just fine. What parts need to be replaced on this thing when it comes apart shortly. part #s / ideas ? |

I've reconditioned a number of '65-77 columns for Tidewater Mopar Club giveaway cars; in nearly every case, the coupler between the steering box and the column was broken. Once the support ring at the bottom of the column was broken, but I've never had a problem with the bearings up inside the column itself. It's quite likely that debris from the turn signal switch and elsewhere have fallen inside and are binding. The only speciality tools I needed was a steering wheel puller, a lock plate depressor, and snap rings. I'd consider getting a special boot to replace the coupler cover - I've found them a bear to get back on. |
