Crimper for open barrel flag terminal?

Post subject:  Crimper for open barrel flag terminal?

Does anyone know what is the proper crimper for this type of terminal? The open barrel / weatherpack crimpers work for the strain relief crimp. For the crimp over the wire the crimping tool I have hits the quick-disconnect part of the terminal. It may work if I squeeze hard enough but I don't want to stretch the terminal out.

The other types of crimpers I found exclusively for flag terminals (interchangable dies with a universal handle) are made for flag terminals where the quick disconnect part points in the opposite direction.

For a perfect job, you'll want a crimper with "W"-shaped die. You can spend a little or a lot on such a crimper; see here or if you want a high-endy pro item, see here. Close-up pics of the type of die you're after are in this thread. The generic name of the item you're after is a crimper for open barrel terminals.

NP Dan, figured I'd get others thoughts.

The crimper I have looks almost exactly like the one mentioned in your last link, with dark blue handles and the New starburst on it. I also have one of the interchangable die types with an open barrel (W, if you will) type of dies.

The problem with either one is that the W isn't very close to the edge, it is set too far back. You may be able to close the crimper part way, but when you close it all the way the opening in the terminal won't allow the tool to pass / close completely. Let me see if I can take a pic to explain the issue.

The die based crimpers are way too bulky and don't come close to fitting the crimp over the bare copper. These types of crimpers, as you see the tool won't pass completely through. I can force it shut but I'm afraid of stretching the terminal. I can probably take a 1/16" off the tool but I figured there had to be a better way.

I made my own by filing a die-notch with a mousetail file in the end of a cheap insulated terminal lug crimper. I use it only for the conductor crimp area. For the stress relief/insulation grip area, I just round it with a needlenose pliers.

It functions fine, but doesn't look as nice as the crimp pattern of a good commercial tool.

I use needle nose pliers on the section that's for the wire, then solder it.

The part that's for the insulation, either my cheap crimper that folds them over and in (looks like a B when your done) or just fold them over with the needle nose.

My last resort would be to file/sand the crimper outward face down a hair. I don't imagine it would ruin its strength any. I was just in the mood to buy the proper tool, if there was one.

Who made the crimpers you show in the picture? I need a pair. Thanks Mike

I actually had 2 that are alike - one labeled Belden that came from Napa and one from a Mac Tools truck.

Also in the waytekwire.com catalog item 419 - Under the tools > crimping tools > specialty section.

They make a similar one that crimps the insulation as well for metripack style connectors.

As for the flag terminals - I did contact Amp/Tyco using the online email us a question feature. It required a part number to submit so I found a similar terminal in their catalogue and gave them the number. The response was no hand held crimper was available because the part only came on a reel (assuming meant for factory runs?). I'm not sure if other parts did come piecewise or not, but I finally just gave up and sanded the leading face of the crimper in the pic down.

Thanks I'll check my NAPA store. I had one my friend called a Hammerhead I got off a SNAP ON truck but someone needed it more than I did and borrowed it forever.
