Post subject: | A833 OD reverse lockout? |
I'm starting on converting my Scamp from and auto to a manual 4 speed OD. Question. Should the reverse lockout prevent the gearbox from shifting into 3rd and 4th? It locks out 1st and 2nd when in reverse and prevents reverse from engaging when 1st or 2nd is engaged. However, reverse will engage when in 3rd and 4th. When one pulls the lever it throws the 3/4 lever in Neutral if its in 4th (OD), but if its in 3rd, reverse can engage while still in gear, which doesn't sounds right. Whats the proper operation of the transmission? Thanks! |

The thing I don't inderstand is how the shifter can be in R and another gear at the same time. Do you mean lockout as in the resistance in the lever to pop over to the left to access the linkage for the R linkage? Or are you talking about in the transmission itself? The only difference externally between the OD and non OD is the 3/4 lever is upside down on the OD trans. Thats because the old 4th 1:1 is now third and the old third gearset is now .72:1 or whatever. On my OD in my truck the long stick makes the 'bump' over to the left to control reverse is much less pronounced than in my Abody with short stick because of the increased leverage. If your stick (shifter) can get back to the left-right neutral slot without disengaging reverse or if the N slot is more like a Z then you might need to index the shifter. Go underneath and make your linkage rods shorter and longer until you can fit a dowel through all three flat tabs underneath the shifter. You'll see a hole there for that purpose. 1/4" IIRC Does that snswer your question or did you want to talk about the guts of the trans? Kevin |

I know the later A833s have an interlock in the side cover, but I didn't think it had anything to do with reverse. |

Im talking about the internals of the transmission. I've aligned the shifter/rods using the holes on the shifter itself. Basically If the transmission is in 1st or 2nd I cant get it to go into reverse by turning on the R lever, there is a stop that prevents it from moving unless the 1/2 lever is in N. But if its in 3rd I can pull the reverse lever into the reverse position while the 3/4 gear lever is in the 3rd position, and the tranny locks up. I just don't think thats right. |

sounds like a good parking brake/anti-thief design to me |

You would have to go under the car to push the lever while the shifter was still in R. I don't see any danger in it. I think mine are the same way? |
