hello all. my 84 D100 has developed an overcharging problem. tried different regulators, no difference. i am getting almost 18 volts at battery. i believe all the grounds to be good. i had this problem this spring when i first got the truck and the fix then was to repair small ground wire on neg post at battery to frame. now i have also lost low beams, they were on when checking voltage and just went out, still have high beams. thanks, andy.

The voltage regulator must have a good ground to the chassis to work properly. Also, neither wire between the voltage regulator and the alternator should be grounded. There have been many discussions on charging system function and troubleshooting on this board that you should be able to find with the search function.

joshie, after finding some of your previous posts i plan to check alternator field circuits for short or ground, and will recheck wiring and grounds. thanks, andy.

after a couple hours rechecking everything, the fix was to take a pair of needle nose pliers and slightly smashing the connectors in the plug that connects to the regulator to make a good connection. thanks, andy.
