hey i hope everyone is having a good new year ......i am having starter problems. I went to start my truck Saturday turned over fine then i had a backfire threw the carb. Now it is acting as if the ring gear is striped out all the way, but when i removed the starter the ring gear is not missing any teeth there is one that has a small chip out of it but it looks old. The bendix gear is not worn. The guy at auto zone tested the starter and told me the gear went into place when it was tested. The engine turns freely when i turn it by the fan blades. i wander if the gear reduction in the Bendix is striped, or if the starter needs to be shimmed. thanks for any advice.

Chrysler starters do not need to be shimmed; that's a piece of stupid Chevrolet engineering, so fortunately you don't have to worry about that. The most likely problem is that the starter drive clutch was destroyed by the kickback you mention. You can check it yourself: use a finger to push the starter drive pinion first in one direction, then in the other. It should turn with medium-stiff resistance in one direction, and should not turn at all in the other direction. It is possible but not likely that the reduction gears are stripped. Probably your best option is to go to the late-model Nippondenso starter. The Nippondenso mini starters are better than the Chrysler units in every possible way: Lighter, stronger, faster, draw less current, longer-lived. They do sound different when operating. On the rare occasion they fail to
crank, better than 99 times out of a hundred it's fixed by replacing the solenoid contacts, which is an easy benchtop job. You can use a starter from any '89-'01 RWD 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9 engine. The '01 stop year is because later starters do not have an enclosed nose cone that fits in the round recess in the bellhousing. Using an open-top (no nose cone) starter on an earlier application causes misalignment and early starter death. Whether you go to the later starter or stick with the original type, do not buy a starter from a parts store, where your choices are "remanufactured" garbage or "100% new" (Chinese knockoff) garbage. If you want a new original-type starter, you can get one from Old Car Parts Northwest .

Sometimes the original hookup locations on the mini starter are inconvenient. There are multiple different connectors available, though, to solve that issue. See here here for connection options.

thanks ed i wanted to try the mini starters ,but never did. You say the re manufactured starters are junk, do they not hold up well.
