My '64 Dart came to me without a hint of a windshield washer. No hoses, no bag, nada. In the FSM it mentions an electric washer (if the car is equipped with it), but no mention of what all is involved. I am pretty sure my car had an other than electric washer setup originally. Would someone on this board have a decent photo or two showing the details of what I need, to include how the bag is mounted in the engine compartment, how the tubes are routed, and how the pedal on the inside firewall is mounted? Lot to ask for but I certainly would appreciate some help. Thank you.

Optional equipment until '66 when it became standard.

The '64 style involved a vinyl-and-canvas bag-style reservoir mounted on a stamped-steel bracket bolted to the left inner fender near the firewall, printed up with "MoPar Jiffy-Jet" with a plain aluminum cap. There are two brass nozzles with steel mounting tabs, an F-shaped splitter at the driver's side of the cowl ledge, and (new for '64!) an electric washer pump with an aluminum body, mounted by three screws below the reservoir bag. The pump grounds thru its mounting and is activated by a black plastic pushbutton protruding from the centre of the windshield wiper switch knob. The switch shaft is hollow and a thin pushrod runs from the black plastic pushbutton to a momentary-contact switch mounted to the back of the main wiper switch. There are four different '64 wiper switches: Single speed and variable-speed, with and without washer. The "without washer" knob is the same as the '63 knob: no central pushbutton nor place to put it. Starting in '65, one simply pushed the wiper knob itself (which is to say, it's probably easier if you're retrofitting to find a '65-'66 switch and use your existing knob).

Starting in '65, the bag-style reservoir was replaced by the now-familiar transluscent white hard plastic reservoir, also mounted on the driver's side inner fender. The metal pump was retained through '66, replaced in '67 by a pump attached directly to the (newly enlarged) reservoir. The metal pump is available as a repro; see for example here.

Dealer-installed with rubber kick bulb mounted on the inside of the firewall, above the headlight beam selector kickswitch.

What's the goal? To have washers that work, to have an original system...?

Dan: Many thanks once again for the information. I really am not so concerned about restoratation of the car as I am to having a functional windshield washer system.

Well, bare-bones function can be had with an aftermarket kit, but it'll look kind of schlock. All the parts except the wiper switch to make it look tidy using (later-year) factory parts (tank has Pentastar logo and "CHRYSLER"!) are readily available brand new, and they all including the switch are not hard to find used. I would use the following shopping list:

Windshield washer reservoir with attached pump and strainer, hose splitters (these usually break) and nozzles from '67-'76 A-body with electric washers (the later nozzles may need to be tweaked for use on your earlier A-body, but they should be close), or just buy it all new except for the switch from Dante's (they say '67-'74 for some reason). Put up a want ad for whatever type of windshield wiper switch you need (single speed or variable-speed) for a 1965-'66 Dart or Valiant, that way you can use your present wiper knob. Mount tank-pump assembly on the inner fender, run hoses, mount "F"-splitter and nozzles on cowl, connect pump feed to "W" terminal (I think it is) of new wiper switch...fill tank and you're all set!
