Post subject:  more hp (bolt on)

am looking for info on adding some horse power to my 225 with bolt on parts. any sugestions would be great... i would like to get as close to 200 horse as posible... i have a 73 dart custom 4dr that looks all original. can any real power be made with the stock carb?

You could bolt on a turbo. Not much bolt on stuff will get you to 200hp, need to get into the engine for that. I.E. mill the head/block to bump compresion, bigger cam, port the head just to name a few upgrades to reach your hp number.

Superchargerstore.com is your only bet thay have a paxton setup that will be the only thing you can buy that will do what you are thinking. The other option is a 4 barrel carb, headers, and NOS Kit. Not a lot of bolt-on stuff.

Aussie Speed Has a Supercharger manifold for the M90 or any of the small roots blowers.

If you did a magical bolton that gave you 200hp you would be disappointed by what a slug your car still is. Unless you change gear ratios and convertor it wont launch. If it did launch you would kill the rear axle.

You would be best to start with a 2.25" single exhaust and a Super6 . Those are boltons that will be useful all the way to 200 hp.

If you add a recurved distributor you will be ready for :
Stage 2....a bolton cylinder head. Then you will have to do some measuring and wrenching.....

Stage 2 will require a new torque convertor and gear ratio change.

Stage 3 : you bolt in a new short block with cam.

Stage 4 add a Holley 500 2 bbl and Dutra duals to make 200hp

The best way to make power with the original carb is tuning. Learn how to set valves using a vacumn gauge. Get your big exhaust.

Best cheap performance boltons.......chrome open element air cleaner and chrome exhaust tip.... Looks and sounds like way more power.

Don't be completely devastated, it's just not a lot of popular bolt-ons. The 350 and 302's are your best options for that. But if you look at them it's still intake and exhaust options, camshaft, and some nice supercharger kits. Otherwise your doing all the same stuff we do!

There's power in the slant six, it's just not easy power. Any fool can make a v8 run fast...

It's so much more fun to get there the hard way!

CJ

PS: Well, almost any fool. Some can even screw a V8 up!

You can make a neat ram air setup pretty easily by wandering through a large wrecking yard. You might have to make a simple adapter to allow the air cleaner from a different motor to fit your oem carb. When I ran my 225 with the Offy intake and Holley 390 I looked through a wrecking yard and found an air cleaner from a Ford 429 Cobra Jet that fit.

You will need to run a hose from the snorkel/air-horn opening to a high pressure zone of cooler air. When the car is moving you will get better response. Right now the engine is drawing hotter air from inside the engine compartment.

Ok, just to illustrate the idea and what you can accomplish with some creative thinking and work, I will describe what I did to my 305 in my 1991 Third Gen Camaro RS.

Earlier versions of that engine in the Camaro had a desirable dual snorkel air cleaner with fresh air routing like I describe. These air cleaners were hard to find and expensive when you did.

What I did was take the original air cleaner and use the earlier lid which allowed a taller air filter. Then I looked around in the wrecking yard and saw that the snorkel from a particular Buick engine would fit in the center of the air cleaner housing. I cut out the snorkel and pop riveted it onto the stock 305 air cleaner.

Then I found another Buick engine that used a flexible rubber air tube that exactly fit the end of the new snorkel that pointed straight forward on the engine. Then I saw that the six cylinder dual air filter system for other third gen cars would bolt directly to this tube. The air filters in the six cylinder housings were redundant so I cut out the centers -- removing the filtering media. You needed to retain the filter gasket border to seal the assembly.

This yielded a dual snorkel assembly superior to the earlier OEM version -- it had ram air to both snorkels and was made by combining bits of oem quality components. The performance increase starting at about 45 mph was remarkable. I very easily blew away other stock RS Camaros. At highway speeds the difference was even better. It dramatically helped my ability to pull out and pass other cars. I would estimate a 20 hp increase at highway speeds. I should add that the installation looked OEM.

So, put on your thinking cap and spend some time wandering through the wrecking yards contemplating how you might be able to adapt parts. 8)

if you want a dual inlet breather for a 4bbl look under mid 80 to earily 90 dodge vans, they have a nice plastic round breather , all you have to do is cut the brace that is across the tb opening and it fits a 4bbl.

You found a 429 Cobra Jet in the junkyard?????? What does the snorkel or fresh air have to do with bolt-ons? It was interesting I guess, but I'm confused on the relevance?

Yes, I found one in a Pic'n Pull wrecking yard. It probably was a blown engine.

I think we are both just thinking of slightly different definitions of bolt-ons. The idea is that you can use creative thinking to make existing used parts off of other engines into dirt-cheap bolt-ons for the slant six.

Here is a picture of a 429 CJ air cleaner. Notice how it seals to the hood for outside air. The snorkel is blocked as it is used for heated air only,

This was an extremely low production option only available in 1971. Only the Super CobraJet came with a Holley carb. The Cobrajets came with a Rochester Quadrajet.

There is no possible way to fit this under the hood of any A body without cutting the hood and installing a massive scoop . The Cobrajet aircleaner would need extensive modifications to even bolt to a Holley carb.
