Looks like a gasket for a 9 bolt 7 1/4" rear end I think...of course I just took a 7 1/4" out of the BV so I might be just hallucinating...

It's aluminum. It's not a gasket. It is for a 7 1/4. There will be more later.

No, it's just the flange for a fabricated aluminum rear cover. I want a little extra fluid capacity and cooling. Might even have fins like a cast AL valve cover. I've seen factory finned diff covers on later model Ford and Nissan pickups.

Why bother with the 7.25? Seems like a bandaid for something that will break anyway. Why not put an 8.25/75 in it and forget about it?

Shaker, just send the extra $400 I need and I'll be happy to have my C-body 8 3/4 housing narrowed, my D100 axles shortened and my drive shaft shortened.

The rear end will not be shock loaded like a drag or even a street car. It only has to put about 250 hp or so to the salt for a few minutes.

If you look, I know you could find a 8.25 for cheap and focus your efforts elsewhere. BTW, my 8.75 w/o center section was less than $400 with axles and brakes.

I'd hate to have it break under load at 100+mph. Just saying is all.

C-clip axles are not allowed at Bonneville so the 8 1/4 is out. Even if I had an A-body housing I'd still need to have my D100 axle shafts shortened as I will not be running small bolt pattern wheels. I can throw money at the axles or the wheels. Since I already own wheels I can use it's just as cheap to go big bolt pattern. Also big bolt pattern factory axles make an A-body 8 3/4 about 3/4" wider than stock.

If I can get the 3.55 gears out of a Dakota and swap them into the free big bolt pattern 7 1/4 I've been offered I'll save myself about $600-700 over building an 8 3/4. The $400 difference I mentioned earlier assumed buying new gears and bearings for the 7 1/4.

This rear end cover will cost me very little as I had the aluminum plate sitting on the shelf. My welder friend probably won't even charge me more than lunch to weld it up if I fit it all together nicely.
