Post subject:  7.25 bearings
what parts are needed in replacing the outer bearings in a 76 scamp with a 7.25 drum brake rearend. also can this be done at home with out a press. i saw in the manual that there is some sort of sleeve near the bearing that needs to be chiselled off. any parts that cant be reinstalled once removed.

An axle bearing is difficult to remove "at home", with-out a press.
If you have to, split the lock collar with a sharp, stout chisel and then cut the bearing off the axle with a die grinder / "wizzer wheel".
If you grind most of the way thru the inner bearing race, you can crack it along the slice, with the chisel. Once cracked, it slides right off.

I have a long section of pipe to do the re-install. Heat the bearing and lock collar for easier installation.
Be sure to support the axle by it's flange (not the ends of the studs) when pushing-on (hammering) the new bearing and lock collar.

thanks doc, i should be able to replace the bearings at home. are there any seals that i will need to buy along with the bearings. also does the lock collar come with the bearings or do i need to get that separate?

The 7 1/4 uses a "sealed" ball bearing as the axle bearing.
The lock collar should come with it, but check.
The only other seal is the main axle seal and to be honest, if it is not leaking now, leave it alone.

i changed the outers the other day and they were flat and sealed. i had to make a plate that i could attach to my dent puller to get the axles out , along with a little heat on the axle tube on the right side, but other than that the replacement went good. the drivers side had a broken ball bearing and was 100% dry. thanks for your help doc.

The taper roller set-up is in the 8 3/4 axle... a good set-up that is strong, long lasting and has adjustable end play.

Also, glad to hear that you were able to complete the axle bearing repair... sounds like you got to it "just in time".

ya, both ball bearings in my duster had gone dry and wiped out the cages pretty bad by the time i got around to changing them. made me wonder how much time i had left till i lost an axle
