Post subject:  Erson 280/270 Valve adjustment ?

Hey guys,

For those of you running the 280/270 Erson.

What do you have your valves adjusted at for this cam ?

Cam card says Running Clearance 0.023/0.023 (Hot).

Is this right ?

Tried calling John,but he wasnt in.

.023 sounds about right so that is a good place to start.
Once the engine is running and "settled-in", you can try some different settings to see what works best.

I have played around with mine a little.I have mine set at 18 intake,22 exhaust.I get the motor to operating temp and shut it off.Pull plugs,I use a remote starter button to get them closed to adjust.I think I get a better feel this way.I do all the exhaust first,set cover back on and re warm up motor and then do the intakes.Then I double check at idel.Just my way.Guzzi Mark

When Doc says "what works best", what am I looking for ?

Best seat of the pants ? Gas milage ?

What exactly am I looking for.

You can use a vacume gauge and adjust while idling....

You can use a compression tester while cranking.

You can use a exhaust temp guage.....

I personally look at the best time slips.Adjust too your wants and needs,Looser for smoothness and mileage.If I wanted real smooth and mileage I would run a stock cam.Mark

"Best" performance... for your needs and driving habits.
One place to find is the end of the lash ramp, you do this by loosing the lash untill you hear some ticking. That is the point where the lash is big enough to miss the slow lift rate of the lash ramp, the lifter "flys over" and hits the flank of the cam lobe and that action makes the "tick" sound.

.002 or so tighter, from the point of "ticking" is the "upper end" of the lash range you have to work with. ( the widest lash setting)
This clearance number can be different for intake & exhaust on dual pattern cams.
For new engines, it is best to find this place on the cam lobe and start / break-in the new engine with looser lash settings.
Once you have the new engine somewhat "settled-in"... try some tighter lash settings and see if you like the results.
