Just stumbled across MoparMagazine.Com a Chrysler on-line publication. Look for Hyperactive Mopars. Great info on the development of the H Pak.

My favorite quotes are about the 170 sounding like a Maserati or that of "ripping canvas".

I tried to search if anyone else had found this, with no results. If anyone has beat me to it, I apologize.

Wonder if we could get permission to use it here on the forum?

Years ago, Tom Hoover told me about the special polishing work they did on the OP drive gears, to keep them from failing.
His comment stuck with me to the point where I always lap oil pump drive gears, to ensure smooth tooth faces.

These days, OP gears I send off to heat treating get lapped prior to going out for case hardening.
Pump gears get lapped again during engine assembly. The second lap is done more to lap the cam gear's surface. This is also a great way to check the contact pattern, especially when the OP gear is "meeting" the cam gear for the first time.

Doc, your comments about that old conversation make me wonder. Have you, (or anybody) tried a small batch of gears that have been chryo-treated?
The process is supposed to reduce wear to almost nothing.

Two notes:

1. Really good article on cryonic treatment of auto parts is here

2. It seems very likely to me that the race cars in '60-'61 were running very heavy engine oil, and we know they were running very high revs.

There is lot's of info. out there on cyro treatments but once again, I apply "not broken... don't try to fix it" thinking.

Seems like a lapped and case hardened OP drive gear does the job so I will stay with that process until we see a reason to try other things.
