I used the search function for a bit and couldn't get anything relevant.

1965 GT, was an A904 car; I swapped in an A230.

Driveshaft from original 904 obviously won't work.

The 230 is early enough that my original crossmember bolted perfectly to it. The trans is installed, and I figured that with a 111" wheelbase, and a 7.25" rear, a late non-duster car with a 230 driveshaft would work, since the wheelbase is the same.

However, this is not the case. I currently have a 54" driveshaft in the car (measured between centers of U-joint bearing caps). I am told that there is to be no more than approximately 2 finger widths (or around 1.25") between the end of the tailshaft housing, and the flared part of the yoke.

On the 54" driveline, I've got approximately 4" between the two aforementioned areas. The yoke slips onto the output shaft about 2" total, which puts it in well enough to seal the deal on the trans.

My main confusion is this:

Why such a long driveshaft?

It seems the engine in the '65 sits farther forward in the car than later model units, but not by much. It also seems a 56.5"-57" driveline would be perfect for the spacing, but I am unsure of how far into the transmission it will actually go (meaning: how long are the splines on the tailshaft).

The yoke I have currently is 6" from tip to flare, and the splines start about .25" down in the yoke. The tailshaft on the trans sticks out exactly 1", and the yoke is currently in 2" on the tailshaft.

Any thoughts?

I have about 4 inches of yoke engagement on my 73 Duster race car. It has a narrowed 8 1/4 rear from a Dakota in it. I would think you would want more for a race car but may be OK for a street car.

The '66 FPC calls for a 56.61" driveshaft for the 111"-wheelbase A-body with 7¼" rear axle and automatic or 3- or 4-speed manual transmission, except for "special order" 8-cylinder cars with any transmission, which get a 54.54" shaft (in this case "special order" almost certainly means 8&#190" rear axle; this is marked as a new p/n for '66).

The '72 FPC says a 111"-wheelbase A-body with A230 trans and 7¼" rear axle gets a 54.13" driveshaft.

Thanks Frank and Dan. Dusteridiot and I talked about it for a bit and decided to "give it a go" and see what happens; sounds like it will work just fine.

Now onto getting that floor shifter hooked up.... And everything else...
