Post subject:  3 Manifold questions

I am going to do some junkyardin in a couple months.
(Cars or trucks Ok with me)

1., What model and years are best to find the 2 1/4 exhaust?

2., When these vehicles (w) 2 1/4 exhaust manifolds left the factory, were they all fitted "paired up" in combination with the 2 barrel intakes as well?

3., Were models when factory optioned with "2bbl intake + 2 1/4 exhaust" all of them named as super sixes? gl

BTW,. JFYI I already have the super six intake manifold.

There is no 2¼" exhaust manifold. All exhaust manifolds have the same size outlet: Two inches. The exhaust headpipe was 2¼" starting in '76 on the F-bodies.

First off, there is no special 2 1/4" exhaust manifold. All the exhaust manifolds have roughly a 1 7/8 to 2" outlet. The only vehicles that I have seen with a 2 1/4" head pipe, also have catalytic converters and these were mostly F-Bodies.

Does that mean that the outlet flange on my 66 D100 manifold casting at outlet will bolt right up this newer 2 1/4 head pipe?

I am not reffering to subject of frame or under body clearences. Just the bolt up. Thanks GL

Number one question was answered and many thanks.!!
I will re-phrase # 2. and # 3. SEE BELOW (re-phrased for clarity)

# 2. Were the later models 2 1/4 head pipe cars and trucks all 2 barrel equipped vehicles, or did the come both ways as in,.. 1 bbl and or 2 bbls ?

# 3. Were all the 2 bbl equipped factory line /6's called "Super Six"

No. 1bbl as well -- not on all vehicles, but on some.

That's just a marketing name on an air cleaner decal. Presence or absence of such an air cleaner decal doesn't mean anything except there is/isn't a decal.

Most people on this forum call the factory 2bbl setup a Super Six. Its like a nicname.

You cant go to the wreckers looking for anything that says "Super Six"

I kept the air cleaner which says super six on it from my last salvage.

I expect that got me to believe that all 2bbl's were named as super six. LOL
My bad,!

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the help. All 3 questions I had are answered. GL

Actually, it is more than a nickname. "Super Six" was the factory name for the two barrel carburetor package. This package consisted of a special intake manifold, special air cleaner, special carburetor, special choke pulloff assembly, special throttle cable, special kickdown linkage on automatics, and 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe. The exhaust manifold itself was the same as the one barrel motor, but the exhaust pipe diameter was larger.

What makes this confusing is that, in the 60s, Plymouth vehicles that were equipped with the 225 cubic inch slant six motor got a sticker on the air cleaner that said "Super 225". This has lead to two misconceptions of the term "Super Six": (a) all 225 cubic inch engines are "Super Six" engines; and (b) all slant six engines with a sticker that says "Super" on the air cleaner are equipped with two barrel carburetors. Both these assumptions are wrong. Incidentally, also during the 60s, all Dodge vehicles that got a 225 had an air cleaner that said "Charger 225". An air cleaner that has the word "Super" on it does not make a motor a "Super Six" any more than an air cleaner that has the word "Charger" on it makes the vehicle the motor is in a Charger.

A true "Super Six" motor is one that is equipped with the factory two barrel carb and associated modifications.

No, "Super Six" is just a marketing name. "E27" was the factory name for the 2bbl package. The point of the question (and answer) is that there is no such thing as "Oh, this is a factory 2bbl slant-6, but it's not a Super Six".

Starting with the '76 F-bodies, 2¼" headpipes were factory-installed on many cars with 1bbl engines, too.

Sigh. Okay, the point I was making is the "E27" package included the air cleaner labeled "Super Six" which causes confusion with air cleaners for one barrel cars labeled "Super 225" etc... I've never seen a one barrel F-body with a stock 2 1/4 pipe, but then I haven't seen every one barrel F-body ever produced.

So... anyway... What's a headpipe? The pipe with the flange that bolts onto the bottom of the exhaust manifold?

I'm familiar with a pipehead... Well I was as a teenager...
