ok anyone here know or have access to a factory 8.75 a body rear? i built one in school and the only dimension i couldnt find an accurate spec on was bearing flange to flange width. i found either 51.400" or 52 5/8". i made mine a hair over 52 1/2" and figured id run with it, but i figured if i made another id like to know the factory width. again this is from FLANGE to FLANGE, or where the brake backing plates bolt up to.
thanks -chris

The only problem with making the housing factory A-body width is that the overall assembly will be wider than factory if you use cut down big bolt pattern axles. The A-body 8 3/4 axle shafts are shorter from the outer bearing to the wheel flange than any other 8 3/4 axle. 7 1/4 A-body housings got narrower when they went to 2 1/2" wide rear brakes on the '73 and newer disc brake cars. The 7 1/4 housing on early cars was 53.2", the later 10x2.5" brake housings were 51.4" as was the A-body 8 1/4. I would measure the difference in axle bearing-to-flange dimensions between A-body and B-body axle shafts and subtract that much from the length of each axle tube

Hard to get a precise measurement with axles installed, but mine is very close to the 52-5/8" number you have. If anything, it might be as much as 52-3/4". It definitely is not shorter.
