The head has been shaved .075 and the block .100. The head gasket will be a Permaseal composite from Oz. The cam is a new Erson 270 and the lifters are Melling aftermarket pieces. How do I determine what length of pushrods to use?

This is one of the last things you're able to buy since the motor has to be nearly complete before you can determine pushrod length. The cam and lifters have to be in the block, head has to be on (and torqued if you want o be really accurate) and valve gear in place. You then buy an adjustable pushrod and see how long it ends up with one adjuster thread showing below the body of the rocker arm. I've also done it by using a stock pushrod and seeing how much shorter I needed, but to do it accurately this way requires precision measuring tools than not everyone owns. Last time I had to do this, I took one of my straight OEM push rods, cut a 1/4" out of it with a bandsaw (grinder cutoff wheel fine if the cut is straight)... use a 1/4" NC threading tap to the hollow pushrod ends, add about 1 1/2" of 1/4" all thread NC and a couple of nuts to "jamb" the pushrod once you find the proper length on cold lash for your cam/lift...jamb in position, bag it up and send to smith brothers, they'll measure and make to fit...let them know whether you want the 5/16" noodle rods or a 3/8" rod (a tight fit in the peanut plug head's push rod holes...but less flex)....

+1 DI this is how I do it now. Seymour loan me the adjustable one. I have since made me one of my own. I cut 1" out of mine.

Go thru a complete cycle for intake and exhaust to check for geometry.

It's possible that you may need 2 different lengths (intake and exhaust), but you can usually compromise to get them all the same.

That's what I love about this site. I would never have thought of making an adjustable pushrod for measurement. Thanks for all the helpful replies.
