 Post subject: Silicone By-Pass Hose
PostPosted: Sun Jul 14, 2002 9:46 am
I know that Chrysler sold black-colored silicone water pump by-pass hoses for the small block. They are supposed to last 'forever'. Does anyone know if they or somone else sells them for the 225 slant/6? You know that little short hose between the water pump and the head that is a pain to change. If so, Part number?

NAPA has a part listed, but doesn't say if it's silicone or not. Unfortunately, it is not stocked in the stores or regional warehouse here in the DFW area. It had to be factory ordered.

Most catalogs say to use 5/8 heater hose, but like you, I'd like to buy something that lasts longer than heater hose.

I put heater hose on mine yesterday, since I will probably have to rebuild the engine in the next couple of years. Then I'll order the good one.

You can make your own out of 5/8" ID silicone heater hose. It can be difficult to find; I have purchased it in various sizes from Pacific Rubber & Supply Corp, 541-342-3350. 690 Conger St., Eugene, OR 97402. Do not forget that it's a bad idea to use regular parts store hose clamps for silicone hose, which tends to want to squish through the slots in such clamps. You need to use double-wrap or "no holes" clamps with rolled edges to prevent cutting or squishing this kind of hose.

Another solution that's a little more "pre-fab" (and more expensive) is the turbo drain hose for the '91-'93 Turbo-III 2.2 engine ('91-'92 Spirit R/T, '92-'93 IROC R/T). This is just about the right length for the bypass on a 225 and is an ultra-duty hose meant to handle VERY hot oil. Don't have a part number, "order by description" from the parts counter.

But I'll also add...why? I've pulled apart some REAL old, high-miles SL6 engines with original bypass hoses...they don't seem to make a problem.

I've seen 30 year old Slants with their original hoses that didn't leak. I've put new hoses on Slants and had them go 6-7 years or more with no problem. And they're not hard to change, just take the water pump loose and it goes right in. Then you have to re-seal the pump, but it's no fun trying to squeeze that short hose in there otherwise. No big deal about using regular heater hose for it.

Does anyone know if you can buy this turbo oil drain hose in longer lengths? Might be an easy solution for a custom turbo application.

Refer to my previous post. Pacific Rubber will have hose suitable for this application. Call them up and talk to them about the temperatures and fluids you need to handle.

Just my $.02 but I have had the by-pass hose end my entertainment on many occassions. My problem was blowing them out at high rpm. I installed braided hose and haven't blown one since.

I'am with you. I've had them go out on slants as well as small blocks. Is there any opportune time for them to go out? I agree, also, that the quality of OEM hoses is excellent, and in most cases aftermarket doesn't quite measure up. That said, the idea of putting a used OEM by-pass on a new installation doesn't add up. I've used the silicone by-pass on a several small blocks, and they still look like brand new, after 10 yrs. I wouldn't hesitate re-using a used one of those. The suggestion of a steel braided hose is worth considering. They would be much more resistant to damage from a hose clamp, or a pressure-washer.
