Post subject:  Yet another carburetor question

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to swap a different 2-bbl onto my car (a Carter 8087S, which is supposed to be a real Super Six carb), and have a question about which gasket to use. I've been using the thick gasket (the one on the left, in the pic below). The other two gaskets came in the rebuild kit. As you can see on the carburetor, there is a recessed channel that appears to allow some sort of equalization of air pressure on both sides. The thick gasket I've been using doesn't have the cut-outs that would allow this, whereas both gaskets that came in the rebuild kit do have it. Does anyone know what this is for, and what effect (if any) there is if these are blocked off (as in the thick gasket)? Also, any opinions on the two hole gasket vs. the one with one big oval? As usual, many thanks for any replies.

Not an air-equalisation passage, it's a vacuum passage. You don't need to use a gasket that has notches to channel manifold vacuum to this passage, because the carb shown has a notch to do so. Continue to use a thick insulator-style gasket.
