Looking for input on timing. How much total advace? How much base advance?

225 ci /Aussie speed 4 bbl / Erson Cam / Full Port Polish head with 1.6 rocker / .100 milled / Clifford headers / 390 cfm Holley / Orange Box / Mopar Perf Curve Dist.

Thanks in advance for the response.

Target between 10 & 14 degrees initial and 30 degrees total.
You will have to shorten the mechanical advance slots to get that much initial with the limit of 30 degrees total.

The orange boxes I have used retard 4-5* at around 4000 rpm. Check yours to be sure. Later

By your build you already have a MP distributor so it should be set at 10BTDC base, the advance is already 20 crank degrees ....and the vacc. pod is about 10-ish... Check your distributor to make sure it has two springs... these are only for "drag" race only so they will give you the full 20 degrees mechanical at about 1200 rpm on the tach...so 30 if you count 10 BTDC base timing... if you intend to drive it on the street you will need to add another stiffer spring in to ease the advance in for the mechanical....

If your orange box is retarding at higher rpms make sure that the light springs aren't allowing the weights to "slap" and bounce off the end of the governor slots and reducing your timing a few degrees. I have a 1990's Orange box and I get a perfect run up to 30 degrees mechanically at 6K without the Vacc advance, and the heavy looped spring slows down that last couple of degrees when approaching the top of the advance curve.

Good luck,
