I have an '83 Dodge W150 with a 225 slant 6. It has a Holley 6145 single barrel carb which is missing the idle stop solenoid. I have been unable to locate a replacement so am now thinking that I might need to replace the carb with something more current and supportable. So I have come to the well to see what wisdom can be shared... Any recommendations on a single barrel carb to replace the original Holley 6145??

There's nothing "more current", as such; your truck was built towards the end of the era of carburetors. 6145 means you've got a feedback system with an O2 sensor. If the rest of the system is intact and working well, you may want to swap to a 2bbl intake and throttle linkage and use a Carter BBD for an '82-'84 318 (also equipped for feedback), a better carburetor which will improve engine performance. These are still floating around; I probably have a new one available on the shelf. But if you are wanting to stick with a 1bbl, and you won't or delete the feedback system (or can't, due to local emission regulations), then you're pretty much limited to finding that idle solenoid. Chrysler part number is 4267 240, Holley part number is 300R-379A. No longer available. Collector Auto Supply lists one; check with them at 800-414-4462 and expect to pay more than it's worth, from them. :-( You may also want to check with Carbs Only and see if they can supply one. Don't buy a "remanufactured" carburetor from a parts store or online site; they're junk. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.

I'm just a little bit north of you in Cypress.
Being that your truck is an '83, it should be emissions exempt. WOOHOO!
So, if you wanted to, you could swap over to a 2bbl intake and 2bbl carb.

83? Texas has it easy compared to Cali.... :D

Thanks for the info Dan, I am not particularly beholding to the single barrel, just thought I could save a little money by not having to replace the intake. All of the remaining parts of the feedback system seems to be working fine and in the interim I have substituted a bolt in place of the solenoid, but of course it does not 'turn off' and the engine diesels when warm. I would be fine with changing to a compatible 2 Bbl, any idea where I might find a replacement manifold and what your looking for on the carb?? I have checked the Clifford and Offy sites and find more exotic manifolds (4Bbl, dual 1 Bbls, etc) but have not seen a OEM style 2 Bbl. Guess the most likely source will be a salvage yard...

The truck is in very good shape for it's age, I got it for 'free', was sitting under a tree for ~15 years. It's got a little rust and a leaky exhaust; nothing that can't be resolved pretty easily; good news is the body is straight and the driveline works well. So far I have about ~500 into tires, brakes, u-joints etc; I keep it to haul trash and dirt bikes in so I am basically trying to keep it relatively stock.

Howdy back at ya Wes, we are just on the Southwest side of Houston, moved here about 6 years ago to spend more time with the grandson. I figure in about 20 or 30 more years we will adjust to the summer humidity and all will be well (oh yea, the truck does not have AC but it does have wing vents, so in the summer it's open the vents fully and drive like hell to cool off...maybe AC will be a future upgrade...)

If you're into junkyard scrounging, you might be able to find a super six intake, which is a 2bbl intake. Or you can do what I'm doing, use a 2bbl carb on an Offenhauser intake with a 2 to 4 adapter.
It's been several years, but A & R Salvage in the Rosenberg area used to have a pretty good selection of older stuff, but I don't know if they are still there anymore.
It sounds like you've got a cool driver/project with that pickemup!
Yeah, it's hot here in Texas, I've lived here all of my life. My Volare has no AC, I sacrifice a little comfort in exchange for less stuff under the hood.
But that's me. :twisted:

Sorry this took so long but I finally found a source for the idle stop solenoid, it is actually a new part and only $27.00. The seller has a couple more, and it looks like he might be a good source for some of those obsolete parts you might be looking for.
