Anyway. 1970 Valiant; I need to replace the Outer seals. no biggy, I have a handle on that.
Problem is I was hoping not to pull the seal until I had a new one in my hand. The Auto parts places and their guides are giving them Options and I cannot believe that Mopar would do this.
A 7.25 with 9" brakes came with a different Seal then a 7.25 that came with 10" brakes? Does this sound possible?

Side note. I have a 7.25 out of a '68 Cuda. 10" brakes I pulled that seal out and looking up the part number for that replacement, it comes up different then the dimensions on the seal I pulled from the axle. The ID and OD are good but seal in the axle is wider. MY thought was to pull teh seal out of the Cuda axle so I can get it sized up to put in the valiant but now I'm not sure since the 9" brake version might be different.
Just looking to get the seal so I can swap it out in an hour instead of pull the axle and seal and go shopping and hope someone can get the correct seal.

Yes I've run into this myself a long time ago. 9" ,10" and the 1973-up cars with 4 1/2' bolt circle took THREE different seals and bearings!:shock: I can't help you any better by giving you part #s because like I said it was a long time ago and I didn't write down any part #s.Maybe someone else will chime in with better info,but for now,try to remove the seal w/o damaging it,and the parts store should be able to match it up.Those 7 1/4 rears are a REAL Mr. potatoe-head.

There really is no reliable way to pull the seal without damaging it. Your best bet, if you don't trust the selection for your specific configuration is to buy one of each then return the one you don't need. Note that there is likely to be some variation in appearance among different brands but if the ID and OD are the same it should work. There is even a "problem solver" seal for some axles that moves the sealing lip inward to an unworn portion of the axle shaft for those situations where the original location is badly grooved.

OK guys. At least I 'm not crazy.

I was hoping to be prepared but I guess at teh least I can slide the axle, Measure the Seal touch surface. That will help firm up the I.D. of the seal. I will take the seal I pulled from the '68 axle and push it into the '70 axle and see if the O.D. looks like it'll work. If it's good, I will bring down the '68 seal to match up , if not. Bite the bullet, pull the actual seal and Hope I can get a replacement.

The old seals were leather and had a full steel case, they are wider than any of the new ones I have seen. I'm not sure when that changed to the late rubber style. It does not matter, as long as the diameters are correct on the new ones.

I have only seen 2 bearing and seal sizes on the 7.25. Smaller with the small bolt pattern (both 9" and 10" brakes) and larger with the large bolt pattern, which always has the wider 10" brakes.

You could just look at the seals and bearings at the parts store and make sure the inner diameters match. Trust the listing for 9" brakes if they show two sizes for 1970.

Thanks. The Seal I pulled from the '68 axle ( small bolt pattern, 10" brakes) looked like leather. so you cleared that up.
You are saying the seal size is related to Bolt pattern yet the Parts Listings use Brake size. I think I'll go by your Bolt size comment and see If I luck out. I'll bring the Axle with me for I.D. check.
