I know there is a problem with stock type pistons because the first ring is a ways down the piston side. Why not have another grove cut up higher.

The only problem with the low ring pack is emissions. Unburned hydrocarbons hide between the piston head and first ring.

Truth is that the low ring pack is good from a wear standpoint, tends to be more stable and the rings see much less heat for two reasons:

1) More piston head material between the ring and the fire.
2) The ring rides on cooler water jacketed cylinder wall. (Remember, the SL6 has a block deck that is .375 thick at the *thinnest* points.)

As for adding another ring, it's just more parts, hassle, cost, ring friction, etc. for little if any benefit in performance. Now if you were talking about a engine running a stationary generator or pump, running at a set rpm, constantly, day & night, year after year, an extra ring would help give that type of engine some added life-span.

As for the racers, most are now using thinner metric ring packs to help reduce running friction.
