Somebody mentioned in another thread that we need to start a "tell us about your exhaust setup thread" so I decieded to push the ship from the dock.

Give us a list of all that you know of your exhaust system. Then give your comments on it. How it sounds, how it performs, overall satisfaction, price (exact or estimated) and tell us if your would have done anything different on it, etc.

EX.

Stock Manifold (cracked)
Full 2 1/4" Exhaust
Brand "X" Turbo Mufflers

Love the sound of the cracked manifold. It performs slightly better than stock partly because of the turbo muffler and the cracked manifold. Satisfied, for it makes due. Not sure on the price of the system, Dad had the 2 1/4" exhaust installed by a muffler shop in 2006, to guess $500-$600. Sooner or later I'll probably get a 2-peice header and do a 1" dual exhaust with an X-Pipe and brand "X" turbo muffler.

Cleaned up Chinese replacement exhaust manifold that came on an engine I bought for $30. 2 1/4" Feather Duster head pipe, some more 2 1/4" pipe to a Walker Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and 2 1/4" tail pipe. You can get an idea of what it sounds like wound up in my burnout video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxyNFXuDUTs

Later this year the car gets a new short block with a healthy street cam and more compression. Should sound different. I might also install these NOS Clifford long tube headers I have if I feel like reworking the exhaust.

A pair of Dutras, a pair of 2 1/8" head pipes, a Flowmaster dual 2.25" to 3" Y pipe, FLowmaster 3" to 2.5" reducer, 2.5" pipe to a cheap Raptor "turbo" muffler dumping right before the axle.

Sounds good.

A pair of long tube headers, 2" pipe to a pair of Raptors, turned down just in front of the rear axle. so much wind noise in the cab from leaking window seals I can hardly hear it in the car......
But it sounds good from the outside..

P.S. the headers came with the car....

Single pipe setup:

A stock manifold with each runner heavily ported and the diverter removed. The manifold outlet has been ported to a full 2.25" for the last 5".

Mandrel bent 2.25" head pipe to a 24" long stainless steel MagnaFlow with a 2.5" core.

I ran 2.25" pipe from the muffler over the rear end into a 22" long body by 2" diameter resonator with a 2" tail pipe and chrome turned down tip at the bumper.

The sound is very mellow without any resonance at any speed. It feels very strong and torquey at low rpms and pulls hard through 4000 rpm.

Skip forward to about 1:25 and you can hear the exhaust.

It has 1 leak at the flange for the header pipe on rear manifold.

Dutra front, stock rear, stock head pipes for front and rear (1 7/8"), then "Y" piped under the driver floorboard into a 2" which goes to a 2.25" I/O Cherry Bomb 18" long Glasspack, then goes to 2.25" pipe over the rear axle, and out the side behind the driver side tire.

Cost: $25 - Made pipes from chunks of old stock pipes, and pipes from other cars I had laying around. I bought the Glasspack for $20, and spent another $5 on an adapter to go from 2" to 2.25"

Definite seat of the pants improvement, no numbers available for mileage increase, or acceleration characteristics.

Now for the Duster:

Stock manifold with 2.25" flange and pipe to a Flowmaster 40 knock-off. Flowmaster is 2.5" I/O, dumping infront of rear tire.

Definite increase over stock pipe, and a 2mpg average increase.

Here's mine. Aussie parts but I'm sure there is US equivalents.
Genie headers, 2 1/4" single system through a Lukey "straight through" muffler and a small "hot dog" resonator up the back into a 2 1/2" droop tail pipe hidden up under the car.

Sounds like this :)

my system is clifford street rod headers dual 2 1/4 running next to each other one pipe crosses over by the trans mount running to a set of turbo mufflers dropped at the axle.the shop that did the work tucked the pipes up nice.it's sounds deep and raspy just the way I like it.pipes and muffs cost about 350

Here is what I have. Engine is a 225, about 9.25:1 with a super six, otherwise stock,

Exhaust: A roughly 2.25" head pipe cobbled together from many pipes I had laying around, goes down to around the trans area, then 2" pipe to a generic flow master type of muffler which is single in dual out, duel 2" flex pipes to the drivers side of the rear bumper.

I constructed this system for temporary use about 2 1/2 years ago. I thought I would use it to get by for a few weeks tops, as I was due to start a job in what I thought was an exhaust shop. Just because a shop has MUFFLER in the name don't make it an exhaust shop. We have no pipe bender, so I could not make my new system, so much for working in an exhaust shop.

Anyway, my thoughts on my system. The whole system is holding up great for something that was supposed to be temporary. The generic muffler (I got it used off a customers car when I did work in a real exhaust shop) is loud at times, but not bad at all at steady throttle. I am sure the single in / dual out is overkill for a slant, but I had it laying around. I really can't comment on improvements over stock as this system was installed during the change from a 170 to a 225.

Things I would change. I would hog out the manifold a bit more. I would of course use real bent pipes, not loose slip fits and angles. I am thinking of changing the muffler to something a bit more quiet, with probably a single tailpipe.

Cost, basically nothing, about half a pound of flux core welding wire, 1 14" chop saw disk, a couple of sawzall blades and that's it. It took me about 4 hours to build with the car on jackstands.

Heres my next setup in progress:

'75 slant ~ 9:1 compression, delta 254 cam, bigger valves, lots of porting and chamber work. Gonna reuse the aluminum 1 brl intake and put my 38 weber on it. Exhaust I have some sorta 6 into 1 header. From there Its gonna be 2.5" pipe into a flowmaster 40 series? It was free, so im gonna use it.

I'm running Dual Dutra Duals, with a unique 2" headpipe setup. Then 2.5" back to a Borla turbo muffler, and 2.25" tailpipe up and over the axle, that dumps straight out under the back bumper.

Sounds amazing at idle with my 280/270 cam. Very mellow exhaust note, and as I'm typing this we are cruising at 75 while having a normal conversation, not shouting over the exhaust.

Seat of the pants improvement over the stock exh. manifold, pipe, rusted out muffler, and no tailpipe. Definitely more torque, and broader powerband in every gear. It doesn't sound quite as mean, but it's certainly quieter. No fuel economy numbers yet...maybe once I'm back home.
