Hi Guys, I have a 1977 Ramcharger, factroy 440 and It burns oil, Espically when towing but Never emits blue smoke from the exhaust..

The plugs get fouled with Burned oil soot so much so that it will at times close the gaps on them :-(

I am assuming it's time for an engine pull and re- ring job..

I dont yet know if anything(pistons) are over sized.. Just wanted to get some thoughts before I start this.

would you agree? Oil rings or Piston lands somehow shot?

Greg

Could be coming past the rings, could be coming past the valve guides. Not really important which it is if this is a high-miles unit; you'd not want to rework the bottom end without redoing the top end or vice versa.

If it was the valve guides I would guess that throwing a set of Valve seals in would not cure the problem?

Truck / Engine has 75,000 Miles on it

If you've got so much oil coming in that the plugs are getting crudded up, a new set of valve stem seals is unlikely to cure the problem. It's a relatively easy and cheap fix, though, so maybe it's worth giving a try.

With that little mileage, it may have stuck rings, or it was overheated and things are distorted. I had a 70k mile Slant 6 Dart that did not leak a drop but burned a qt every 100 miles. Valve seals might be worth a shot, but you almost always see a little cloud when you first fire it up if it's seals.

Does Not smoke at all.. even at start up.

That is one of the reasons I was suspecting rings.. It drinks alot of oil especially when towing.

On the other hand my 318 truck Needs valve seals again, (startup Smoke) but burns no oil on a 3,000 mile drain interval when towing etc. on a 107,000 Mile Motor.

Dan, Every car / engine that I have owned or worked on that needed valve seals had a puff of blue smoke on start up.

It's a hunch and not al all scientific.

The Head Have been Worked on by A prior Owner and It has Crane Rocker Arms and Crane Positive Seals on the Intake and Stock Type Seals on the Exhaust..

I am going to Replace the Umbrella Seals on the exhaust as the Positive seals look good and I have no way to replace them or replacement seals to do so at this time.
