Post subject: | Improvised Engine Run in stand |
There was a topic some where on the forum a few weeks back about if an engine building stand is safe to start an engine on. I think the unimanous vote was no on that. I have been saving a n old f body k frame for a a few years. It had some rot in a few places so I didnt want to ude it for a car, but it had slant 6 motor mounts on it. I finally dragged the thing out this week and decided to make an engine run-in stand with it. I can start and run engines on it before they get installed in a chassis. I am not totally done with it yet. I want to put a transmission support back there too which I have not done yet. but you'll get the idea. Well here it is. Greg |

My 65 GT's K Frame was slightly modified by the PO prior to my acquisition back in '84 (he trimmed the left front as the V8 he put in there hit that part of the frame). I now have an unmodified one I pulled from the 66 Barracuda I parted out, so as soon as I'm able to pull the "modified" one out, it will be built along the same lines as my engine break-in stand. Since it will take a slant or V8 with the appropriate motor mounts, it should be perfect for my uses. |

I'm about to do the same exceptI'm going to make a wheeled cart like a furniture dolly, and be able to mount a radiator on the front, and have a spot on the end for an attaching plate to hold the back end of the engine... using a spool K like the one you have. I've also thought about having a small panel to mount: a simple oil warning light, a tach, and an O2 gauge and a place to install the ignition system... I figure when I go EFI I can break the engine in and do a rough bench tune out of the car, then drop it in the car and do the rest there... Keep us posted! -D.Idiot Looks good so far... |

My Idea after thinking about that previous thread was is to cut up this 81 D150 I have laying around here. I figure I can't sell it, not even for $250. The cab and all the sheet metal Will interchange with all of my 85 trucks, and my 85 Ramcharger, which I can't seem to sell either. I can chop up the bed and use it on my dually. My point is the truck wont go to waste being cut up. I like the idea of the front part of a truck frame because you have most everything built in like just leave the core support in and there is your rad mount, Cut it behind the cross member and there is your trans mount. Really the only reason I am thinking about cutting it, was I was thinking about making a trailer from the rear frame and axle. I am now considering not cutting the frame and just leaving the wheels on it to roll it around. All of this will have to wait until after I move this spring or summer. I also have a Volare around here that I could use the sub frame from, it would probably be smaller, but more work.True, not everyone has this kind of space, and I know a whole truck frame may not be for everybody, but if you have the room it seems like the easiest way. I think you should add another triangular brace next to the front leg on that side and box it together with the one next to it. If you look at where the engine mount is, components of the moment could allow the frame to flip forward at the corner. |
