http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k207/ ... motor%201/ The above link is pics of the head and block. The obvious problem is the head gasket on 6 showing a bit of a problem. Number 3 shows as having a little burning on it's top and then there are the valves that show up as light. What I find interesting is that there is nothing on any of the piston walls - they all look clean and shiny - no grooves etc. The valves also "feel" lilke nothing is wrong with them - when I run my finger over them - they all feel the same - no "sinking" etc. Okay - so tell me what I did wrong and what - besides a new head gasket and intake and exhaust gasket do I have to do next?? Reed - ?????? That head was checked, decked, ported and polished and all new everything - 5 yrs ago You telling me I "screwed up" again??? lol - just par for my course I guess!?!?! |

Pour a little gas into each cylinder and each combustion chamber and see if it drains right thru on stays in a puddle. If it drains thru fast, it's time to check for broken rings or bad valve seat sealing. You should resurface the block and head before replacing the head gasket, or at least spend some time on it with a long, flat sanding block. Doing that will show high & low spots on the surfaces. DD

Doc - when I put it together it looked as clean as the pic you posted. I will go out and do the gas check right away. I have $50 in the bank - talk about doing this on a budget! |

Like Doc says, make sure the block and head are flat. Also make sure the timing and mixture is correct so you aren't getting detonation as that will kill a head gasket in a hurry. |

H'mm. How do you figure? I don't see evidence of a burned valve, do you? The combustion chamber (revised or otherwise) has nothing to do with whatever failures occurred in this engine, and a full rebuild of any head, regardless of whether it originally had the surface hardening of the exhaust seat area, includes the installation of hard exhaust seats.

yea Dan - that was all done in the original rebuild - I am still at a loss now as to what happened with the damn thing - still think it is the stupid carb - maybe it dumped a bunch of gas into the engine and combined with an out of adjustment valve?? - Although whenever I checked the valves - and I usually kept up with them - at least every couple of months - they always showed very little "outta" adjustment. And - again because of me running it at high rpms' pretty regularly - I always felt - and again this is just me - I KNOW NOTHING, I SEE NOTHING, - I sorta always worried that the valves were floating at times?? Yea I know - but I'm weird as you may already know. Now I need new head gasket, intake exhaust gasket, another $35.00 worth of oil etc - along with cleaning and re-installing all this - damn it. Back is in such bad shape right now I can hardly sit here. Where do I get gaskets? - ya'll know better than I |

Okay - just looked again - #3 valves - have completely emptied of the gas - the others are down a bit but not empty like #3 - that was one of the low compression readings - #6 I know was the head gasket and it still shows gas. All the pistons kept gas in them - very little leaking - although it has gone down for sure - but I figure after 1/2 an hour it would drain through the rings? |

Yes, after a period of time, the gas will drain thru the ring gaps and evaporate. The test showed you what you needed to know. You can try tapping on the #3 valve stem tips to ensure they on solid on their seats, then test again. If it still drains fast, it is time to remove the exhaust valve and inspect the seat. (start with the exhaust valve, then do the intake if you don't find a problem with the exhaust valve seat surface) Apply some Dye-Chem to the cleaned seat area (or use a marking pen) to color the seat then use lapping compound and work the valve around on the seat. That will quickly show you any seat problems. DD |

Thanks Doc - so now I need to find a place to buy - a tool to remove the valves, chemicals to check the seats and lapping compund. hmmmm with no vehicle to get to town - 24 miles 1 way - and no money to buy that stuff with - I guess it may be awhile till I can go any further with this. where is the best place to get gaskets for this? thanks again ya'll Dan |

It is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions. |

FelPro for the head gasket of course and you can get the valves out with a deep socket and hammer.That will let you start looking at the valves and seats and worry about putting it back together with proper tools when money and proper tools are available  Oh and if that old van is just to much of a PITA let me know when you want to give it away

okee dokee Doc - did the tap thing and retested - gas stayed in even longer - had to rag it out Vanner - not a problem - 5g's and I'll deliver it!!!! SlantSixDan - already checked that site out - last time the pages were even updated was 2007?? - They still around and is there someplace closer to get them?? felpro - for the head gasket - okay NAPA it is then |
