Post subject:  1976 Volare Power steering unit

Trying to find a power steering unit for a 1976 Plymouth Volare. I think the pump is out which caused the unit to cease operation. I don't know. Can anyone help?

(1) is there fluid in the pump?
(2) is the belt attached to the pump?
(3) is the belt tight?
(4) does the gearbox or pump leak excessively when fluid is added?

there is fluid in pump, but it leaks and now the steering wheel will not turn at all in either direction. The belt is good and tight.

Even if the power steering pump fails the wheels should still turn. It will just be more difficult to turn the wheels. Is it hard to turn the wheels or is the steering truly locked up and not able to turn?

I'll have to check. It is my son's car. It seemed that he turned the wheel and the tires didn't turn, but I'll check it out. I'll let you know tomorrow. Thanks for responding.

I rebuilt my P/S pump using a kit from my local parts place; I need a special tool to pull and install the pulley, but otherwise it was simpler than rebuilding a carb (note - there was a note about which of O-rings to use in the kit on the back side of the instructions where you might easily overlook it).

If the p/s pump goes bad, can it cause the box to go bad also? And do you know if the Volare has rack and pinion? Thanks

Recirculating ball steering, not rack and pinion. I could see the pump eating itself and dumping trash into the gearbox and causing it to fail, but I have to believe it's a race occurrence.

A rare occurrence means something that does not happen often.
