Hello all, I have a '68 Dart 270 and after having some initial electrical problems (w/ the gas and temp gauges) my cars electrical issues are all gone... so I thought. Unfortunately as I was driving this morning I had my turn signals fail on me. I've never had an issue w/ the turn signals not working before. They stopped blinking both outside and on the inside instrument panel. I checked all other electrical functions like head lamps, radio, heater, E-brake, brakes lights and hazard-flasher lights, and they all still work fine. I checked my all the fuses and everything checks out...apparently it's only the blinkers. The only thing that happens now when I use the turn signal arm (either up or down) is I hear the blinker sound once, but it only makes that sound when I first move the switch. I believe all the bulbs are good because when I use the Flashers(hazard lights) I can see the green turn signal indicators flashing on the instrument panel as they should when the flasher is activated. Please, can someone tell me what steps should I take to locate and fix the problem. Is it behind the instrument panel or in the steering column itself?? I'm lost. Thanks. |

THe first, easiest, and cheapest suspect is the turn signal flasher. It is clipped to the RH side of the ashtray housing behind the dash, if '68 position is same as '71, which I think it is. The flasher is a round can about an inch diameter by an inch tall, and has two prongs on it connected to a 2-wire plug. Unplug it and pull the plug down under the dash so you can work with it. Unbend a paperclip and insert one end in each slot of the 2-wire plug so the two slots are electrically connected. Put a sandwich bag over the plug with paperclip; that'll be electrically live in the next step and you don't want any short to ground. Next, turn on the ignition and operate the turn signal lever. If the flasher was at fault, the signals on the side you select will light up steadily (no flashing) with the paper clip in place. In that case, put in a new flasher. I like to use the "electronic" flasher, which comes in a transparent plastic can and has a part number of EL-12c at most parts stores. It is a very tight fit in the original spring steel bracket, but can be made to fit with some force. |

ha! i thought you were joking about blinker fluid. wow, really? huh. had no idea. does it taste good? anyhoo...mine are wonky too....i think all my wiring is on it's last legs. ar! sure would like to get it fixed. i have one turn signal light on on the panel at all times, car on or off, and much like the horn, they seem to work when they will, though they have yet to work for me, which is a real pain because....i have serious issues regarding people who do not use turn signals. hand signals it is, then! the horn seems to think the very best time to start blowing like mad is when i am stalled out at a light or in stop and go traffic. it really makes life a joy. i wish it would work when someone doesn't use their turn signal. but who cares! i love this car! thanks for the tips. |
