My oxygen sensor went on on my 1980 Volare . I did not know I had one!. Anyways, my service manual explains how to reset the warning light, but does not tell where the sensor is. I am assuming it is somewhere just before the catlytic converter. Anyone know where?? Also, what damages/ effects will occur if it is not replaced?
The vehicle had 62k miles. The light is supposed to go on every 30k. I have no idea if it was replaced the first 30k.
This morning , for the first time ever, the engine died while coming to a stop off the freeway. It this related, or a fluke??

Your gettin' warmer, but not quite there. Typically, the O2 sensor is installed in the exhaust manifold, right near the tansition to the first exhaust pipe. It's removable with a wrench, and usually has a single wire coming out of the end.

Typically, the O2 sensor is used by the computer to monitor the amount of oxygen in the exhaust, which relates to whether the engine is running rich or lean, then adjusts the fuel injection for an optimium reading.

Hmmmm. Is this a slant 6 we're talkin about?

If you have an O2 sensor then this car must have the California emission system with the O2 feedback system and special carburetor with wires coming out of the top of it. The O2 sensor is in the exhaust manifold, immediatley ahead of the starter motor. I'd have to dig out my service manual for that year to verify, but I don't think the O2 sensor will affect idle fuel rato. I believe it only affects the fuel ratio during actual driving conditions.

Yes, it is a California Emissions car. My Mopear Sevivice Manaul did not help much. I was looking in the Engine Performance Manual. I was looking at it rather quickly before going to work, so maybe I missed something. I have only looked where the reset mechanism is ( inline with speedo cable).
