Post subject:  idea: slant 6 genset
I saw a slant 6 out of a car the other day and it reminded on a stationary engine. I know slant 6s were used all over the place in many different applications, and had a good durability track record.

So that got me thinking. What about building a genset using a slant 6 as the power plant?

yeah I know there are better engines out there, use a diesel, blah blah, but it really peaked my interest as a fun project.

So here is the scenario:

stationary enviornment
constant use at a single rpm setting
ease of serviceability

and above all: fuel efficiency and durability

With the above scenario how would you setup your slant 6?

things like:

What doner engine would you base your project on?

what parts would you use, any modifications?

I would use the 198 running at 1200 RPM with a 3:1 pulley ratio to the generator (3600 RPM) which makes it easy to use an off the shelf AC generator (60 Hz).

If you can find a tractor junk yard, see if you can find a oliver 525 combine. It has a chrysler 230 flathead with a vary nice governor and air induction setup.

I'd run a 225 at 1800 RPM directly driving a 4-pole 40-50kW generator head. Lower RPM would be OK for lower output and a bit longer life, but no one uses gas engines for prime power so the life issue is probably moot. Use an isochronous electronic governor if serious frequency control is needed or desired, otherwise a belt-driven mechanical governor is fine. I would build a sound attenuated enclosure with automatic louvers and a small thermostatically controlled block and oil pan heaters. If you can gently warm up the engine before applying load you can do without the heaters.

The generators here at work are 1000hp Cummins V12s and each cylinder bank has a 4kW block heater that keeps the water temperature about 110°F. The engines keep the room quite warm. Our engines start and take load in less than 60 seconds.

My home generator is a 5kW Winco brand driven by a Wisconsin THD engine at 1800 RPM. For the $120 I paid I have no complaints. In a more perfect world I'd have a generator with a water cooled engine so I could use a heat exchanger in my air handler to provide heating for the house.

We use a peanut 225 with a BBS in our Rose Parade float chassis, it drives all our 120v, 12v and hydro power.
We use a ring gear pick-up electro-mech governor running at 1850.

Generator's a 7,000 watt (10,000 peak) Harbor Freight cheapie, paired V-belt driven, 2 to 1 ratio.
Alternator's a Delco 100 amp one wire, single V-belt driven, standard ratio.
Hydro pump's a 3300 Parker-Hannifin in place of the gearbox (clutched) for 1 to 1 ratio.

A typical operation'd be;
Hydro- two lifts, one continuous animation.
120v- two continuous animations, 6000 watt audio system (isolation transformer), valving for hydro, two water animation pumps.
12v- one continuous animation, on-board intercom system, cabin cooling fans, cabin lighting, governor, animation engine operation and redundant battery charging.

The slant never really works up a sweat. :D

You could also find an LP setup from an early White(?) forklift that used the slant as it's motive power.

Not trying to be a thread stealer here, but I find this topic fascinating.

Can any of you with experience with gensets, gen heads and the like, recommned a good web forum for reading and learning about this stuff?

I have long been entrigued with the idea of building a genset out of a diesel mercedes engine I have. If I run it on bio-diesel or svo it qualifies as renewable and is legal to use for "net metering" in my area. I'd love to power my house and sell back electricity to the power co. How cool! :)

This Gentleman heats and powers his house on Vegy oil with an old one lung diesel. Google his name and you will find lots of info. These listers can be converted to spark ignition to run on producer gas (woodgas).
