Welcome on the board. If your truck was originally equipped with a manual choke, the carburetor will have a long choke lever (green arrow) and a rounded fast-idle cam (orange arrow):

If your truck originally had an automatic choke, the carburetor will have a short choke lever (green arrow) and a fast idle cam with several stairsteps on it (not shown):

Original-type choke thermostats are no longer manufactured, but can be found with some searching as New Old Stock components. Usually faster and easier to install one of the electric choke kits -- #1231 for your truck. It will work whether you have a Carter BBS or a Holley 1920 carburetor; both were used as original equipment.

Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. The engine will need periodic valve adjustment. And Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.

Hi gang, I have had many Mopars and still, do but have no /6s. I recently bought a cheapo 68 DODGE uteline short bed that I am going to fix up. I managed to get it running since it was sitting for 10 plus years. However it needs a choke. Any idea? PART # for 68 /6 motor for choke and choke well???? I am working on a 68 DODGE sweptline and it has a /6 and is a manual, is there a difference in the choke depending on trans, type of carb, ect? This truck has not run in over 10 years. I pulled the fuel line and got it running. Pulled it into the shop and then changed the oil and dropped the fual tank, whcih was shot and rusty. I happened to have a donor truck and used that tank after cleaning it up. I can get the truck starte dnow,but I have to keep ont he gas and it has NO CHOKE on it. I checked rock auto.com and there are several. Do I need to determine my carb, or anything first? Also are there different oil pans that hold different amount of oil like larger motors and if so, what are the capacities? Thanks Dave

Welcome to the Forum! It would be very helpful to know which carburetor is on there. Dan will put a link up soon enough outlining choke options, but make sure to look at the "Frequently Asked Questions" thread here in the engine area. Lot's of good info including carburetor manuals and so forth. Sounds like a great little pickup! CJ

You've got some mix-'n'-match action going on under the hood, there. Somebody's installed a '70-'72 exhaust manifold which has an open hole at the top of the #5 runner, capped off by a gasket and a steel cup. All earlier and later exhaust manifolds have a cast-in choke pocket with no open hole in this location. You can still use the electric choke as linked earlier, but you'll need to buy kit #1234 rather than #1231 to hook up to that carburetor, which is a '74 or later Holley 1945. I imagine the throttle linkage hookup is a little hacked! If you're after a correct manual-choke carb for your '68, I have a new one of those on the shelf; send me a PM if you'd like it.
