I just posted an intro in the Social section about my Valiant.

I'm just formulating a plan...and need some advice.

I want to be able to drive this car asap. If the original slant turns out to need a rebuild, I want to pull it from the car and take my time learning the engine and doing it right.

So...that means swapping in a running slant six as a holdover until I get the rebuilt original put back in place.

I've found a few running slants here and there for decent prices, but I want to make sure that they'll swap in and mate up to the automatic transmission.

This is a bone stock 76 model with very low mileage on it, so that should tell you experts how it's configured now. I know various upgrades were done to the slants over their long production span and that the automatic transmissions also saw some changes over the years too.

So...the question is...will any 225 swap in there for a temporary runner, or should I be looking for something specific?

Look for a 68 up ( I would go 69+ to be sure) Slant engine. Or you can look for a slant with its auto tranny still mated to it. The basic break is 60-66 small crank register 67 could be either then 68 up large crank register. Just some other FYI things the crank went from forged to cast in 75 and the engine went from solid lifters to hydrolic in the early eighties. Those will NOT effect your hookup and either is suitable.

Welcome on the board -- looks like a terrific "barn find" car.

Any 1968 or later slant-6 engine will work. There is no such mixed "could be either" year as Frank has in mind. 1967 was the last year for the small crank counterbore and torque converter nose. 1968 was the first year for the large crank counterbore and torque converter nose.

If you get an engine from something other than a '68-up A-body (Dart, Valiant, Duster, Demon) or F/M body (Aspen, Volaré, Diplomat), you swap the original oil pan and pickup pipe, and the 1976 engine mounts, for physical compatibility.

Some of the changes over the years were upgrades; others were not. Mid 1976 (not 1975) was when the cast crankshaft came in, and 1981 was the first year for hydraulic lifters; Frank is correct that neither change affects interchangeability.

You can do a couple of searches on www.car-part.com (searchable used auto parts) to see about a working used engine to run while you're working on the car's original; some searches likely to turn up results include 1970 Dart, 1976 Valiant, 1980 Aspen, and 1985 Dodge D100 truck.

Definitely get the factory service manual.
