| Post subject: | electric fan questions |
How large/small(cfm, dia., is one more important than the other) of an electric fan can do I need for my 225 /6 automatic w/air? Really don't know if the air works yet and don't know if I'm gonna use it, if that matters. I know the relay will need to be hooked up with the air if I do use it. What type of sensor do most of you like, the radiator type or in-block type? Or is there something else? Just want a daily driver with no worries. Thanks, Dennis |

After running a electric fan the last 5 years on my Dart I have tried them all. My preference is the GM style radiator tank 3/8 diameter screw in type switch. It has been trouble free and easy to plumb. See my post in the Engine FAQ sticky for wiring diagram and details on the switch. When your stuck in freeway traffic on a hot day it is really nice to have a good working system. It has worked flawlessly on 110 degree summer days. |

Get the biggest fan that will fit.... I like the adjustable thermostats so lyou can set to the temp you want. (someone else said they just got an adjustable at checkers/kragens for $15) |

Thanks Ted. Had already seen your post and marked your wiring diagram. Makes things too easy!! I like using the radiator bung for the sensor, just didn't know if one was as efficient as the other. About the biggest one, size does matter? Diameter, I can go 16+".My biggest problem is not much room between radiator and pulley. Maybe 3"? What about amps? Will it be an issue with my stock charging system? As I said, it has air so I believe it could have a heavier duty charging system. I can't tell one alternator from the other. |

Actually, I went the other way. With smaller fans you can get more core coverage and only run what is needed.I like the adjustable thermostats so lyou can set to the temp you want. (someone else said they just got an adjustable at checkers/kragens for $15) I have 4 10" fans on my summit rad. |

I just have stock system although I have replaced some of the wiring harnesses. My fan only draws about 10 amps max. Here are the specs: Rated at 2200cfm CFM Pull-2400-2700 Push 2200-2500 Dimensions 16" x 16.9" x 3.2" Amps 7.5-8.5 Volts 12 It never runs too long or very often. It is a pretty sweet set up. You can tune it with the thermostat pretty well. By tuning what I mean is...... If you have a brand new clean rebuild with 2.5 coffee cans of junk removed from the water jacket like mine you can run a 195/205 stat just fine. If you have a 30+ year old engine with all the junk still left in the water jacket like my recent $150 barn find, then a 180 stat works best. |

The Pro Comp 16" fan I am using fits fine. I see that Derale has nice thin line fan 17" in diameter and 2 5/8" thick in JEG's part number 259-18217. It uses a Bosch motor. It will leave plenty of room.

4 10 inchers is like 1 20"... Can you fit 4 - 10" diameter fans on a stock Dart radiator? I would like to see a picture of that!  The core on mine only measures 18" wide by about 18.5" high. |

Thanks for all the info, suggestions and ideas. Wow Ted!! Looked at that fan at Jeg's. Little too steep for me($127). I figure being Bosch, it's gonna be good but not that good! Think I may go with the Procomp you used if I can find one. I think I may have found it, just the price has gone up a bit and go with an adjustable thermostat( just gotta figure out where I saw it at). I have looked at so many different things and read so many different threads that my head is reeling. Isn't the internet great? Isn't it great to have so many brains to pick for help and suggestions? |

Sometimes you can go thicker on the electric fan than you think you can because thickest part of the fan doesn't line up with the part of the engine that's closest to the radiator.............. |

There are fans in the $25-35 range at kmjent.com, check out # KMJ PC2054S, 16 inch with curved blades. Try finding a curved blade fan, they are quieter and more efficient. Search, and you'll find info on curved vs. straight blades on the net. Olaf |
