I'd like to say that I have had a very good experience with an (the bottom of MSD's line at the time) MSD-5 + orig. point ignition; worked amazingly well and has for many years. When the ignition switch broke, I accidentally left the ignition on for hours w/ the engine off - while the (JCWhitney performance) coil burned out, the MSD-5 worked fine.

I put it on a scope and could see that the multispark stopped by ~1500 rpm, but it greatly improved starting and the idle quality over points using the same cap, rotor, plugs, wires & coil. (I can't remember if I bypassed the ballast or not; it's still there, but I'd have to look.) I like the feature that to convert back to point-only operation takes only about 1 minute.

The 2nd MSD-5 I bought for another car got totally confused below ~32F shortly after its warranty expired, so I took it apart. It seemed to be a far simpler design than their MSD-6 and to be non-capacitive discharge.

In another car I put in the Direct Connection factory-style distributor kit; the orange box died after a ~2K miles, but the NAPA top-of-the-line replacement ECU has run just fine for years. I tried to dissect the orange box, but the potting we pretty messy. The only thing I could say for sure was that the main transistor mounted on the external heat sink appeared intact. Still, I always carry a spare ECU, ballast, cap, rotor, coil & coil wire.

Could you please describe your Pertronix failure modes and the model #?

Same here. Five years with it, and I've never had a single problem. :)
