I am going to build an engine for my truck. My brother suggested thinking about an E85 build. Any one have ideas for a recipe? E85 is fairly commonly available around here. |

You'll need a carburetor specifically designed and built to tolerate high concentrations of alcohol or, preferably, fuel injection. You'll need to rework the entire fuel system (coated fuel tank, stainless lines, stainles sender). You'll need a lot more compression, and fuel economy will slip; E85 contains a good bit less energy than gasoline per gallon. I think if you carefully do-out the math, using all factors that are based in reality and none that are based in propaganda or guesses, you'll find this is not a sound idea. |

Unless you goto fuel injection that can determine the ethanol content you're just guessing on the air fuel mixture as E85 can be anywhere between E75 and E85.... |

Having clicked the thread Shaker223 links to and reminded myself of that exchange of, um, creative and imaginative perspectives on questions of fact, now is the part where I practise doing the "I have already offered an opinion so I'm shutting up now" thing. I'm still not very good at it, as you can see.

Doug Powers and Dave Mueller have E-85 rigs. Dave's dual 1bbl typewriter car is a driver. Doug's runs a 500 cfm Holley and is drag race only. They work well, and the exhaust smells nice!  CJ |

I concered E-85 as a fuel but as SSD said they change the mix,in the winter its got less ethanol in the winter its got more. Its also vary hard on anything rubber in the fuel system hoses, diaframs, ect.,ect. A much better alternative fuel at least in my opinion is propane i've never tryed it but it looked better. |

I will agree that propane is a wonderful alternative fuel, as long as you have a way to easily fill it and intend on not getting in any accidents (you'll go out with a bang, literally). I converted my 79 Power Wagon with a 360 to a dual fuel setup with propane and gasoline, it worked pretty good and it'll help a tired motor get a few more miles. Remember to still change the oil after your regular intervals, looks will be deceiving as your oil will look brand new after a while of running on LPG. Your mileage will drop a little bit, or at least it did in my case, but this was a farm truck that was basically used like a tractor for pulling stuff, so mileage really didn't matter. It didn't see many highway miles, so serious accidents wasn't a major concern. It was a simple dual fuel carb that sat atop the regular gas carb inside a larger air cleaner, with an added vaporizer and solenoids for the fuel lines, and an 80 gallon LPG tank that mounted directly behind the cab in the box. Plus it made the exhaust smell good.
