I'm getting popping noise on the radio. It took me awhile to figure out the cause and effect, but I'm thinking the radio isn't grounded very well. It's the original 64 AM radio, and when I hit a bump, I get a little pop from the speaker. (series of bumps = series of pops) I would think the rear bracket would be a good ground (it's tight), but maybe not...... Easy enough to run a ground wire; BUT, Is there something inside that could be loose? |

There's lots inside that could be loose. Do try a ground wire (another sign you need one is a pop every time the brake lights go on or off), but the radio may need repair. |

The factory radio is usually grounded pretty solidly via the brackets and antenna cable. While it's possible that a ground problem is the cause, I think it far more likely you've poor power, speaker, or antenna connections. I'd start by removing, cleaning, and replacing the fuse. After many years, I've seen them suddenly make poor contact for no obvious reason - just cleaning the fuse and contacts was enough to fix the problem and it didn't return even after some years. Also, fuses to age and sometimes get flaky inside - the filament comes a little loose from the cap, so try a new fuse. Also check the radio's connector. If that doesn't fix it, look at the speaker connections and the speaker itself. Next I'd look at the antenna connections and especially where the shield grounds to the fender. If those are solid, you might remove, clean, and reinstall the main power transistor if it's socketed - on some of the radios you can replace them easily w/o soldering. An outfit named ~Tannenbaum sold me the Sams manual for several factory Mopar radios that I've fixed; those manuals are very good and well worth the money. Most of the parts in the old factory radios are fairly easy to find except the impedence-matching transformer; I've not come across a source of replacements for them, but I doubt it's bad in yours. If you do open it up, beware that electrolytic caps age and so if you've get into the component level, I'd check them 1st for excessive leakage current. Good luck! |

it's working  My original thoughts when it was popping was electrical (brakes, voltage regulator), which is why it took awhile to hear that the pops corresponded with bumps... (I was checking rpm and other electical loads) When/if it starts again, I'll see if I can reproduce it while under the dash... Wonder what effect temperature has, it's warmer today; and it's fine............. |
