Post subject:  tough questions

question 1. Are the bolt patterns, bore spread, and bore size of the holley 2280
and carter bbd the same? (i have a junk BBD and was hoping i could use it as a pattern)

question 2. Does any one know what alloy aluminum was used to cast the intake manifold?

question 3. Is there a plate on the market that i can weld or bolt to my properly prepared manifold,so i don't have to make one. If i do its not a big deal.

I am trying to figure out what materials to gather for my intake modification.

thanks for any help

(1) yes. Just use a BBD or 2280 base gasket as a template.

(2) possibly, but not me.

(3) depending on what carb you want to run, mr gasket 1937 or build your own for a straight BBD/2280 bolt on. I built my own two barrel intake for use with a BBD and I had to build my own base out of flat iron welded together and drilled and tapped for the carb bolts.

Yes.

Probably not, but which kind of intake manifold? Sandcast 1-piece or EB-welded 2-piece?

Yes. See the Parallel-2bbl intake manifold mod article (pdf)

thanks Reed and Dan,
The alloy probably is not that important I just wondered if it was a hard to weld alloy but, if i get some porosity in the weld epoxy paint should seal it.

Thanks for the advice.

If your going to weld aluminum plate stock do not use 2024 or 7075 it is aircraft grade but not weldable, safe choices are 6061 or k100s tooling plate. they are both stable.k100s is a cast tooling plate and stays real flat.
