Post subject:  Correct spark plug gap

I have a slant six motor and the workshop manual specifies spark plug gap to be set .033 to .037 thou.

I have added Pertronix 1 electronic ignition (and very happy with the result) and have heard that I should gap the plugs to say .040 thou as a stronger and bigger spark is produced with electronic ignition.

I would appreciate your views on whether I should increase the spark plug gap if electronic ignition is fitted.

Thanks

With HEI's all seem to like 0.040--0.45

With my HEI at first i just had the gap set at .035'' then rememberd to widen the gap. Then I took it to .050'' and it seemed to run ''better''.

I'm running .045 with a pertronix I and spiral core ignition wires......

Also they're extended tip spark plugs.

crickhollow, I ran my plugs at 0.042" when I had Pertronix on it's own. Just have a play around with gaps, open them up till you start to notice changes, good or bad. You'll find what your engine likes.

Have you installed a higher output coil, or are you still using the stock coil?

I am using the standard coil - I have connected the red wire from the Pertronix 1 unit to the ignition side of the ballast resister and the black wire from the Pertronix 1 unit to the (-) negative terminal on the coil.

I run .045 as well, either with the MSD Blaster 2 coil or the 3 ohm Pertronix HV HEI style 60,000 volt coil. The plug color is white with the HV coil. Cream/light biege with the Blaster 2. Still using the Orange ECU for now.
