It's time to replace the front and rear speakers on my 1963 Dodge Dart GT hardtop.

Any recommendations?

Things to beware, avoid?

They're 8 ohms.

The front on my 64 was 6x9

But modern 6x9 speakers don't fit in front because the newer magnets are much much bigger.

I ended up using 2 4x6 4 ohm speakers in series on an adaptor plate.

Yes, there are thee "holes" across the back under the rear package shelf.

On my application, one of the "speakers" is actually the air intake for the rear window defogger. Thus, it looks like there are two speakers at the rear, but there is only one.

Where would I get this? Or did you make it yourself?

Made it myself.

Someone here on the forum makes plates (not sure if he does 6x9)

Wasn't hard to do....

My plate attaches to the factory plate, that then bolts in under the dash.

Have you tried Radio Shack? They use to have those speakers. The originals dry out and turn to dust because of the exposure to sunlight,heat,cold... Before you install the speakers spray them with a LIGHT coat of urethane on the paper diaphragm. Do not soak the speaker. Turn speaker face down to dry. This will give the speaker longer life. If you can find it get some black speaker cloth at Radio Shack. It will look like black stiff cheese cloth. It goes between the speaker and the speaker grill (keep it tight). It keeps dirt from falling into the speaker. If dirt falls in it will buzz and rattle and drive you crazy.

In the club's giveaway '65 (http://www.tidewatermoparclub.com/Givea ... /2001.html), I put 1 6x9" under the dash and another in the empty defroster hole in the back - it was a perfect fit there, and we didn't have the defroster for the hole anyway. The cover that came with the speakers matched the opening w/ no mods at all. An AM/FM/CD DIN-mount provided front/back stereo and it sounded good (at least to me- I'm not an audiophile).

Usually, we put the orig. AM-only radio & stock-type speakers back in, but it was missing and the hole for it whacked out, so we welded it up and recut it for a nice solid DIN-mount that looked nice and blended in pretty well.

I had tried cobbling up 2 small speakers as a test for the front mount, but they didn't sound very good to me compared to 1 big speaker.

My car is a convertible, so options are limited for me.
I wish I could find a quality dual voice coil speaker for the dash.
RetroSound makes some, but I've heard them and the sound quality is disappointing. It's fine for AM radio, but not up to playing music with the top down.
I really like Ed's idea of using two smaller speakers with the bracket, but I wish I could hear them before spending the time and money.

Only have the AM radio, so anything new would sound better...........

Also, they were only $20 for the pair.

(recently I got a pair of Boss 4" speakers from Amazon for $13 and free shipping (got some books to make it to the $25 free shipping))

I did the make a plate thing in my convertable. A high school friend works for Carson Helicopters, they use Bose speakers in the birds and replace them every 6 months weather they need to or not. He gave me a couple pair of 3" speakers. They sound good even at highway speeds on an OLD sparkomatic :D

You can also mount speakers under the seats, angled down to "bounce" the sound off the floor.
