Post subject:  possible overdrive trans in a '68 dodge gt /6?

hi, this is my first post.
my wife has a 68 gt convertible w/ the stock 225 /6 and auto (904). i plan to build another 225 to replace the original (for minimal downtime). how difficult would it be to adapt an a-500/a-518 overdrive trans to this engine?
are there many body, crossmember, driveshaft mods required? or, should i just stick w/ the original trans?
i'd appreciate any advice you could share.
thanks,
mike

Difficult and costly. You would need a bellhousing adaptor and flex plate spacer; they're out there but are not currently manufactured and tend to be expensive. You'd need floor pan and crossmember mods, a shorter driveshaft, a control system, etc.

This is a terrific idea.

i'll be back on the board as soon as i start the engine build.

There is another option but it's about $2500:

gearvendors.com

It's a 2 speed automatic overdrive that bolts up to a replacement tail shaft housing.

For the 3rd generation a-body, installation requires either no modification to the floor pan, or some denting of the driveshaft tunnel for clearance. No modification of the crossmember is required. The driveshaft needs to be shortened.

The least expensive approach is to change the rear end ratio to something like a 2.76.

2.76 is standard equipment in a '68.

Do check the rearend gear ratio so you know what is in there.
Lot's of things can happen over the years... you don't know what is under the car until you have varified it.

If you are looking to keep the RPMs down, the 2.76 gear set and some tall rear tires will do that.

Contact DusterIdiot on this board. He has the adapters to go from slant six to A500 or A518.
