Post subject:  42RLE in an A100 with a 170 /6

Has anyone looked into this swap?
I have a 1964 A100 pu with a 170 /6 and 904. The rear is an 8.75 with 3.91 gears. I was thinking of adapting a 42RLE to the 170 and changing the rear ratio to 3.23 for highway.
Does anyone know how long the 42RLE is? I don't have very much of a driveshaft so if it is longer than the 30.75 of the 904, I can't swing it.
thanks

 Maybe a simpler question......How long is a 42RLE from Bellhousing to tailshaft end?.....
Thanks

I don't think anyone has done this. I have a 42RE in my '68 Dart 225. Took a lot of work to get it in there.

IIRC, the 42RE is about 9" longer overall than the 904 trans. Would be tough to get that to work in an A100.

:( Thanks Lou.....looks like the only way I can go is the GM 4L30E....it is 27" long (4" shorter than the 904) and has a removable bellhousing that I may be able to adapt......I think I will upgrade to a 225 /6 at the same time
Thanks All

Don,

I will be very interested in your swap if you use the GM 4spd auto. Since you live in NC, will we see you at a Slant 6 race this year??

Lou,
I am going to try to get there this year......
I have a 4L30E and a TCM....want to go with a GM TBI system and distributorless ignition and have been offered a built 225 in trade for the 170, so I may swap it out.......I already have an 8.75 rear......I think I can keep the 3.91 gears with the 0.72 overdrive......
Thanks
Don

Hope to meet you this year. 3.91 with that OD should be fine. Like the other ideas too.
