Does anyone have an idea of when the A500/A518 was first used in the full size Ram. Reason I ask is since I have an 87 D100, one ought to fit with virtually no modifications (other than finding one of those elusive adapters to mate the slant to the transmission). I figure a non-computer controlled transmission from about a 93 or 94 (or earlier) ought to work.

Thanks for the info. So it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to install one (assuming I can find one of those adapters). The rear end currently in the truck is an 8.25. I haven't determined what the ratio is yet but I figure most trucks came with either a 3.21 or 3.55. I guess either would be about optimum for use with an overdrive.

Those transmissions have a .7:1 overdrive. I wouldn't run anything numerically lower in a /6 pickup than 3.21 overall. You need the torque multiplication to push through the air and climb any kind of grade. You'd need to run 4.30:1 gears to get an overall 3.0:1 in OD. Cars can use numerically lower gears due to the lower aero drag and lower weight. Most V8 OD Dodges have 3.55 to 4.10 gears. A 225 is working with less torque and therefore needs more torque multiplication.

I had a 92 Ramcharger with the mechanical Tranny (I think 93-94 is the cut off where the PROM does the "thinking"). Even with the 5.2...3.55 and OD was not the best match, I think 3.91's and it would be happier...slant six and 4.11/4.56 is looking much better...
